Tramontina mods, making it work.

Isn't the PVC potentially very bad for you to work with?

I know that stuff melts bones right out of people's hands when they're making it! :barf:

dont melt it, just get it warm. It dosent take much heat for it to become maliable.

Oh, I know that, but it's sort of like how hot liquids in older Nalgenes caused them to leach BPA into your drink. PVC is just known for being pretty nasty from a chemical standpoint. In theory it's completely safe once it's cured into the final plastic product, but I've just heard too many bad things to trust it completely.

Anyone seen my tinfoil hat? :D

How do you do that kind of sheath?

That is too cool for words.

Marion

I actually learned this from a thread here a few years ago.
Take a heat gun and warm the pvc from the inside and outside. Soon, the pvc will become kinda soft. If the heat gun is turned all the way to the hottest setting this will only take 5-6 minutes. Then press it between two boards, or anything flat, for a few seconds. Thats all it takes.
Oh yeah, don't heat pvc indoors for the reasons already mentioned.

Definitely heat up PVC outdoors and please wear a respirator (test for fit/airtightness) with Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) cartridges (the black ones). That sickly sweet odor that you may smell when it's heated up is vinyl chloride - one bad mama jama. Attacks your liver and it's a known carcinogen.

This has been a public health announcement.

Awesome mods by the way. the most ambitious I've gotten was to sand down and shape the handle and extend the grind to the tip of my tram bolo.

i see thease at our local agri supply for $3 and they have horrible grinds. they also have a couple cs machetes

here is my convexed tram with sheath:

This is beyond awesome....

I have a Barteaux upon which I would like to do some mods, but the sheath was an issue...

Now, I can mod it, and make a sheath.... Maybe I will do a tutorial.....

i just bought a tram today, and am going to begin modding it tomorrow... hopefully i'll be able to convex it. fun fun

Great Mods. Question--Other than grinding with a belt grinder is there some way the steel can be cut into a different shape w/o changing the temper of the blade? Maybe a dremel with a carbide blade (some heat?) Thanks for any info.

I modded one last week with a dremel cutting wheel.
Made an 18 inch into a pseudo-Martindale Golok pattern.
Draw the line where you want to cut then cut along the line, maintain an awareness of the temperature of the blade.
If its hot to the touch stop for a while. Either let it air cool or apply a cold wet cloth.
I kept a bowl with a cloth and cold water on the table nearby (CAVEAT-mindfully keeping water away from electrical appliances, lol), when it got too hot i soaked the cloth and applied to the steel. Then started cutting again.
I was done in under 25 minutes.
