How many of you Folks use a tram as your machet of choice?? I have 2 12 inch convexed ones coming from siguy... I'm psyched wondering how they
hold up in the NE woods.... There a little thin and will chew up a baton, but has anyone battoned with them?? Thanks

Funny you should ask bro.

I sent the one you gave me to Simon, he did a great job Convexing it and shaping the handles for me.

Don't have any pictures, Riley, but over the years we used them a ton including batoning. They do chew up batons, though, but who cares?

The machete of (our) choice is the Tram Bolo. I have noticed over the last few years, that the Tram Bolos are of thinner stock than previous and don't chop quite as well, at least the ones available around here.

Doc do you know any good online Canadian sources for Tramontina's?
I will order from Smokey mountain if i can't find a Canadian source.

heh I found a tram in my shed when I moved in to my new house... Has a real nice patina and a well decorated leather sheath. Looks kinda old, maybe 20 years or more. I'll get some pics up soon.

www.sirmailorder.com (now cabellas) has Tramontina's shipping from within Canada.
Thanks! I never thought to look there i though they only sold Cold Steel.

Wow thats some markup!
18 inch Tram is 5.99 in the U.S , 15.99 in Canada!
Don't get me wrong i like SIR i've ordered lots of gear from them and their prices are usually decent but thats quite a price hike.
I was going to order 2 or three trams plus some other odds and ends, plus a Bolo Tram (SIR doesn't have them) so looks like i'll be buying from SMKW.

I have one that I am going to send to Siguy as well. Does anyone know for sure what steel is in the trams? It seams to hold up pretty well for the money.

This is my subject. I love tramontinas and have used them for the past 5 years for everything, everywhere.

In areas where I know there are, less than ideal trail situations, I carry the 12" Tramontina backpacking.

Sorry th, I do not. We used to get out Trams from Le Baron but all he carries now (or at least the last time I checked) are the thinner Bolos and they don't chop nearly as well.

I still have a thicker bolo somewhere that I was going to rehandle. You think I can find it? :(

Because of our friend, Bearthedog, I can post this!:D
I have been using it while cleaning up after a storm - using it on Aromatic Cedar, which is NOT succulent, green vegetation, rather hard and brittle stuff. So far, I am impressed.

I had the oppertunity to try out that Tramontina. I was amazed with how efficient it was, considering the thin blade and light weight.

I got my first Tram from Dougo, it is a wopper 24" Tram:eek: It had a lot of rust on it when I got it so I took some sandpaper to it & now it has a nice pitina look to it & is Hairshaving sharp ! I liked it a lot so my wife purchased me (from SMKW) a 14" Tram w/sheath

Hector,

Where are you in Brazil? I normally live in BH but I'm exiled to Pennsylvania this year. Good to see someone else posting from Brazil.

Abraços,

Mac

Most seem to go for the wooden handled Tramontinas, is that because the wood is better/more comfortable than the plastic or is it simply due to availability?
Is there any real difference between them?

for as is, the wood is too cheap and not very comfortable. I hate plastic but on the tram it's better, last longer and some shock absorption.

now if your talking custom, WOOD!

Mac you always have great pictures, luv your work hermano ;)

I like the wooden handles because plastic gets real slippery/uncomfortable when your hands get sweaty. They're also easy to shape with a file and some sandpaper to make them fit your hand like a glove, so no hotspots and a very secure grip is easy to do with a few minutes of effort. One problem is they tend to crack and split after a year or so, you can prevent this to a degree by soaking the handles in linseed oil for a while. Once they crack you can repair them pretty easily with some epoxy or just put new handles on.
