I have never seen a person make the notch in the hearth BEFORE they burned in. Seemed to work well for him.
When I saw what he was going to do I thought - Oh - yeah - that wood would work REALLY well. I just would not have thought of doing it myself. Brilliant!

This reminds me of a florida survival trip a few knife guys took (akabu, I think you were there). George Hedgepath wanted to tick everyone off and just brought a kitchen knife as his only knife. Did mighty fine with it too.
