Trapper review, Buck,Case,Rough Rider,Schrade

...would I be better off to just buy a couple less expensive knives (preferably carbon steel, in a couple patterns) knowing that they will be going to go to the boys any ways, and figure out which style I like more, and purchase 2 of those to hand down to the boys, or just order 2 of a more expensive brand first and learn to love them in spite of whatever shortcomings they make have. I scout carry a bk11 everyday, and a leatherman in my pocket but sometimes a fella just needs a traditional to round out his choices, what do you think?

Welcome to the Porch! Since you're not sure what pattern you're going to like, I would recommend getting a Rough Rider in a pattern you think you'll like. If you like it, great! If you don't, get another in a different pattern to try out. They are priced low enough that it's much easier to experiment with them. If you get an expensive knife and don't like it, it will probably end up in a drawer eventually. When it comes time to give your boys knives, they aren't going to care about the brand, but if you do find a Rough Rider pattern you love, you can always save up to buy more expensive versions for the boys later.

I agree with PaulS. PaulS. Rough Rider has many patterns to choose from at prices low enough to be able to get several different ones. They are good quality. And if you find a pattern you really like, then your more informed to buying higher end knives which will work for you. And when it comes time to give knives to your boys the thing that's going to matter most to them is its DAD'S KNIFE! Welcome to the forum, great place to learn and share

You guys are awesome, I appreciate all the incite. Its great that the knive community has so many similatities to the firearm community, and as different as the tool is, it shares a ton of the same thought processes. Do I own a few rifles that may or may not cost more than my old pickup? Sure, but do I have a few "budget rifles" that will still preform almost as well as their high dollar gun safe neighbors at a fraction of the price? You bet. Thanks for the nod towards rough rider, maybe ill get a couple in the works here shortly. Now off to Amazon to find some pants with more pockets, I can already see that this whole knife thing may get a bit addicting.;)
