Trashed my Recon 1 today UPDATE

Im not stirring the pot im trying to learn about steels.

do you guys suppose the same thing would have happened if all circumstances were the same but it were a different steel than aus8 in that folder?

Depends on the steel and heat treat.
Given the right combination of the above, no, it would not have happened.

I don't think AUS-8 is a bad choice. It is a reasonably tough stainless while keeping a decent edge. I don't think there is a clear choice in the medium cost stainless steels that would have been clearly better. It's a folder rather than a big fixed blade, but CS manages to use AUS-8 with large fixed blade knives without problems.

Well one usually doesn't chop with serrations. I either get it plain or fully serrated and both have their purposes.

It's a thin, partially serrated blade with a high hollow grind. Of course it chipped when you were chopping wood in winter with it.

BTW is that real AUS-8 or the Chinese "equivalent " ??

It is the real deal from Cold Steel. Knife is made in Taiwan. I had a Recon 1 with AUS8 and the steel acted like other AUS8 I have.

ok, honestly I have to ask...WHY!?!?! or at least WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?!?!?

I appreciate that everyone here has hacked away at wood with our knives at some point to check quality and durability or even worse, because we had to for survival purposes. However, I just can't fathom why you would grab your folder to hack away at wood branches at your home. Sure, I admit you should be able to do whatever you want with your folder and you did prove it wasn't as good as you thought and might get a replacement, but seriously I saw your picture and read your post and I heard my grandfather's famous words ring through my mind, "Use the right tool for the job or ruin the wrong one...".

I've beaten mine to death and chipped it once in three years. Lock has never failed, and cold Steel replaced the blade no questions asked. Even swapped from serrated to non serrated for me.

My 2 cents don't use a folder to do a fixed blade's job.

Which would have failed the exact same way with the same grind and steel...

Didn't fall apart at the pivot, so all the fixed blade talk is irrelevant to the issue experienced. ;)

Cold steel has had quite a few failed heat treats in the past but most are on big blades not really on folders. They replace many knifes each year and most of them were wrecked by people re-enacting the youtube stuff so I am sure they will replace that for you with no hassle at all.

same thing happened to me. Haven't gotten around to sending it in

Man 2 cold steel knives with serrations and chips.. This is conclusively a weak knife and every recon 1 will grenade in 3..2...1 oh wait. 2 of possibly HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS doesn't mean it is an epidemic?!? Whoops carry on.

But the lock held. :D

That's an interesting point. Just watched their Recon 1 video. Despite all the spine whacking, brisket slashing, metal box stabbing, and for some reason having a fat guy stand on it, at no point do they chop where the knife does not pass through something in one shot.

They are aware of the reality. If you take a thin bladed knife (like most folders), stick it in wood, and twist to get it out, you can get those big moon-shaped chips.

Its not a fault with CS or with folders per se (except in that they typically have thinner blades that fixed blades do)...it a fault with using a thin blade to chop.

Though! Some...and I wont say who....would call that user error or improper technique and not replace the knife.

I'd be interested to see if CS replaces it. Good on them if they do.

Go ahead and take advantage of that warranty while abusing your knife. Hope they don't deny you after reading this thread!!!
