We are going to be flying to Arizona for a week long vacation. The wife has it in her sweet head that for us and our two kids we should try to us only carry ons and forgo any checked baggage.

That would mean no pocket knife or leatherman.

I don't think we can manage without one or two checked bags.

I hope her evil plan falls through.

Why would you carry on your luggage with two kids anyway?

BTW, AZ is open-carry, bring along a fixed blade in a slip sheath or IWB sheath. You'll enjoy it!

One of the kids will be 10 and the other is 5. We will have the stuff to keep them busy, snacks, maybe a portable DVD...

I am not sure how she thinks we could juggle that and fit in enough stuff to last a week. We will have laundry in the condo but still.

One of the first things I checked was the knife laws. The Benchmade that I a currently EDCing is a tad longer than 3" so I was curious. AZ law seems similar to MN so no problem as long as I can check a bag.

I lost a Leatherman Micra to the airport in Guatemala City in 2004. I will not make that mistake again.

I am not really fixed blade fan for EDC except for huning, fishing, and camping.

Arizona sounds like a good place to pick up a few new pieces to carry back in checked luggage...you'll probably need to check luggage on the return if you let her buy a new purse and a couple pairs of shoes. Win-Win.

The second time we traveled to Florida we had to buy a wheeled duffle to get all the stuff she bought back to Minnesota.

Are their any good knife shops in or near Phoenix? We do not have many in MN outside of the sporting goods stores with a knife counter.

Down in Tuscon an hour South is a great little blade shop run by a member here! I checked it out multiple days when I was visiting out that way a year or so ago. It was great and I brought home 3 new knives at great prices! Shop owner is a Veteran and very knowledgable and friendly guy to boot!

In your situation I would definitely buy something locally and then just mail it back to myself, unless I was checking baggage -- and given that you're less likely to lose the package than your bags, you might want to mail it to yourself anyway.

Enjoy your vacation! Arizona is a beautiful state.

I was thinking along those lines. My thought was to head to Walmart on arrival, buy toiletries and whatever consumables we didn't pack along with a cheap knife and then just ditching the knife in the trash on departure.

Something like this:
Byrd by Spyderco

or one of the Walmart branded cheapos.

No need to trash the knife; buy yourself a small padded envelope and mail it home. You don't need to worry about insurance or tracking or anythign if it's not that important to you, and chances are it will get to you and you'll be that much farther ahead of the game. I hate to see a good knife go to waste! :)

I assume they will have a post office in the airport. Would be pretty easy to do.

Might have to buy something worth the postage from AZ to MN.

I go to AZ Often Not only is Open Carry Legal( And Very Fun By the way, to walk around with whatever you want, Big BIG Knive in sheath, Pistol in holster and such) You can also carry Automatic Knives!!

But to OP- Just mail your favorite EDC to yourself. Your Letherman and whatever else you like to carry and a BIG Knife for Fun. Not many place can you carry a sheath knife to the movie or resturaunt and NOT get SWAT Team on you. So easiest way is to mail it to yourself.

This also Brings the topic up again. Sorry But I have to mention it.

People on here, a lot of the time, and a lot of people say Knife no Good For Self defense.
So No Good for Protecting yourself and family, so that means can't stop/hurt/kill? so then why Can't have just Basic Leatherman on airplane?

It Make me chuckle to myself when un-trained or just Mis informed people say that regular knife is no good for self defense. Again if you Believe the "Official story" of the 9/11 targety. Little Box cutters in the hands of determined men turned air plane to missisle.
Maybe not the "Stopping power" Of 38sp or 357 magnum. But I gaurentee I can stop attacker with 3 inch or less "regular" pocket knife. And so can you;-)

Anyway, If Don't feel like "Checking" bag with knife, Just mail to self. Thats what I do If I want to carry Auto knife to place I fly to.

Over here we can bring knives with up to 6cm blade in our pockets on board,
I thought that was an international regulation?

Locking folders and autos are prohibited though.
But a slipjoint or a fixed blade is not (legally) a problem here with regards to flights.

Hammerhead nailed it. If you're staying in a condo, there will be a mailbox, if it's a hotel people often forget that guests can receive mail. Get yourself a priority box and print two labels; one from your zip to the AZ zip, and one the other way. Put the return label in your bag and ship the box ASAP. When you get the box in AZ don't trash it, slap the return label on it and toss it into the box at the hotel or condo before you head off to the airport. You can even print insurance IIRC.
