Wow really?? I didn't know you held it so highly! What makes it stand out from other knives? Has the steel held up well for you?
The only thing that has held me back from purchasing one was not being able to find english reviews on them haha so i havent been sure of their steel and HT. Not to say Elmax or M390/20cv is a slouch, but it depends on the HT. And I can be pretty tough on my knives at times and so always need something slicey but durable.
Okay, I'll try to make a go at this in a way that hopefully makes sense. Remember, I'm much more of a hunter/trapper than a bushcrafter, so that heavily affects what I carry.
On the trapline and following my dogs, I don't usually have need of a big knife. There is more of a need to move fast and light. The small splinter is one of those blades that packs so light it is forgotten until needed.
It is very slicey, wickedly so really, being so thin with the full flat grind. I would not hammer this knife through anything personally, it's not designed for that, but it cleans small game up to deer-sized game well. The xs may be just a tad shorter in blade length than what I like on deer, and therefore my desire to try out the full-size splinter at some point. But the xs fits my hand perfectly when skinning with blade held cutting edge up, thumb against the index finger flare. It's perfect for small to medium game in part because it fits me so well, which of course will be subjective with users hand size.
This is my first go with N690. I have found it to take a good edge and have reasonable durability. It is also very corrosion resistant. I have only resharpened this blade once, and was surprised when I needed to use a bit coarser abrasive to get the job done, at least at the start of the job to set the secondary bevel where I personally wanted it.
I guess what I'm saying is that even though the xs seems light duty, after sharpening it, I have more faith that it will hold up for a long time to come. I was not displeased that it took some effort, because the whole blade doesn't consist of a lot of steel. The steel certainly did not cut away like butter, lol. I would like to see this blade made available in M390 or perhaps some really good D2.
I was so close to buying a splinter ,but I think someone here got the last one......
Sorry, that was me, at least if you're talking about the small splinter
I think russianblades is getting a run of the full size at some point, hopefully soon.
