Trends - discussion

'toning down' one's everyday carry is good for two specific groups. The sheep and the wolves. The anti-knife sheep masses will accept you more if you try to 'offend' them less and show that you are giving in like they want. The predators of the sheep(criminals) will never give up the use of their arms to violate the sheep. It's the natural order, the sheep establish their own order, but the wolves exisit in a state beyond their order and don't have to follow anyone's rules. I believe many of the people here who legitimately carry and don't tone down, are in a very difficult state, we are not fully accepted in the sheeps orderly system, and are many times alone somewhere in between the sheep and the wolves. Not fully allowed with the sheep, but not armed/strong enough to fend the wolves.
It's not a comfortable place to be, but I rather be more wolf than sheep. I'll continue to be armed to the level 'I'm' comfortable with and when ill-educated sheep confront me about my lifestyle, I'll reeducate them to the best of my ability because one never knows how influential that one person can be to the rest of their flock in the future.

I fully recommend no one here 'tones down' anything about their bladeware. You will only be condemning yourself and weakening the bladeculture as a whole. There are some of us who try to change our immediate little worlds for the better, instead of constantly being changed for the worse by it.

Reality check. I had a friend lose a serrated Endura to an officer because it was scary looking and weapon like even though it was legal. Whether he got his knife back eventually, I don't know. Right now, people (including law enforcement) are not being very tolerant of knives and knive carrying folk. IMO, this is really not a time to try to make a point of how rebelious you are. I agree with education...that's very important, but all the same during a time of controversy, it is better not to try to slam your beliefs in someone else's face. People dont adhere to radical ideas very well...they need to be converted slowly. If this means being somewhat conservative in what I carry..I'll do it to make an eventual difference.

I think my point was not very clear here.
I understand people aren't very tolerant at this time. They have their right to be. I'm not advocating being 'rebellious' in any way. I never suggested breaking any laws or to 'preach or slam' beliefs at the masses. I follow my states penal code to the word(to the best of my interpretation) and recommend to all who ask me to do the same. Nothing bad going on there.
Fact is I carry and train for personal safety and so do several people I associate with. That is our right. 'They' aren't breaking any laws, neither are we. There is no sense in downsizing our carry pieces and lessening our defensive profile voluntarily. That would be admitting some kind of fault of ours that we are correcting, which is definitely not the case.
Reality/history shows us criminals won't change their violent ways or what they use regardless of the collective social sentiment of the time. Until the danger to myself lessens, I can't justify lowering my guard without being legally forced to(which would be the worst case scenario).
There is no choice but to educate people slowly, but in the meantime, we should not weaken ourselves to that end.

take care,
Ken

A Spyderco with scissors would be perfect, or at least fantatstic. (it has to have a blade too)

Scissors would be sweet, but they have to be heavy duty...Hey Magician, Gerber makes a pretty sweet little blade with some scissors. I think it's called the Urban Companion.

Though I've seen 'em on custom knives before, it was the Gerber that made me think it'd work for Spyderco.

Plus, didn't Benchmade debut a two-bladed knife this year? With a li'l slipjoint opposite the main blade? Seems to me a good pair of scissors would be much more useful than a smaller blade.

I don't really like smaller knives, they don't fit my hand. I really hope that a "small knife trend" does not develop. I prefer knives in the 3.5 - 5.0 range. Personally, I feel that the Delica is too small.

Spyderco customer service is excellent, maybe they can help you:

I hope this is not a trend. I have fairly small hands and most small folders are still difficult to hold on to and open. Personally, I'd like to see Spyderco (one of my favorite companies) jump on the wagon and make a MEGA folder with a 5 + inch blade.

I think taking into account "public opinion" is a mistake when it comes to trends. Gun companies in the past have taken "public opinion" into account and it usually backfires because the gun owners feel let down. Lesson: the "general public" as a whole is not the customer, knife collectors and user's are.

As for "whipping out" a large fixed blade or a mega folder to open the letter's on the desk? I carry a small folder for tasks like that, not that I care what the public thinks, it's just more common scense.

if spyderco made a sub $70 folder with a splinterpicking point and nice pair of scissors, i think that it would be extremely successful. I for one would get it.
