PM me your address and I'll send this out by Friday
I am heading up to the Bay Area this weekend
Maybe I'll have some antique store finds when I get back.....

Codger===>"Damn!! Not ANOTHER Ireland TM4...I got cartons of them"
Hehehehehehhe
I saved one for MY toolbox...

Did I do the math right??

Congrats Codger! Couldn't have gone to a more deserving winner:thumbup:

Darn cool contest Trent!

Eric

Thanks Trent... and Eric! I guess I'll have to try to peg rough dates for those knives when they arrive. And no, I don't have many of the Tradesman series at all. We have a rough idea of the age of the Wonda-Edge marked knife, and the Craftsman hollow ground is found in the 1951 Sears catalog. When Sears sold the Wonda-Edge knives, they called them "Craftedge". I see those in the 1959 catalog.

LOL
So
I'm in the thrift shop in my bi-weekly search for art, tools, books and knives
I see a Granny's BONER knife
They wanted 2.91
The ferrule or bolster or whatever it's called was SILVER not brass
Maybe the brass plating wore off in the dishwasher or something

I declined to buy it based on the amount of money I had left in my wallet after visiting 3 thrift shops that day
As I walked out the door
I thought to myself
"Damn Trent...Your turning into one of those SUPER PICKY knife collectors"
I guess I am getting pickier and pickier everyday
If it would have been 1.91 I would have bought
Homo Economicus works in strange ways I tell ya........

I opened the kitchen drawer...er...the package and was impressed! What an assortment of knives! Now if I can hide them from the wifey until I can research them all. "Granny" seems to have appeared around 1967. Maybe it was a tribute to Henry's wife, Elsa?

Thanks again Trent!

The best part is wondering if in 10 years====>
Sear goes bankrupt
Craftsman "name is sold
The old Craftsman kitchen knives start selling like Chicago Cutlery prices

I keep my eye out for them
I got a few I sent to my house in Colorado
You can sorta date them by the logos
The Collectors of Schrades R Us site has a good collection of logos
I am fond of this era for some reason
craftsman1960logo.jpg

I think it's because iy reminds me of the GAS Coleman stoves/camping days with my dad
Plus...Craftsman has the niches with the old tool collectors
Did Coleman ever have any knives made?
Hmmmmmm.....

I really think you should take ALL your kitchen knives out of the drawers
Put in the Granny knives and the mini cleaver
See how your wife reacts
"Oh yeah honey...I forgot to tell you..I sold all our old knives on Ebay...I streamlined...I got the Granny's butcher knife razor sharp for ya!!!...Used to Ol' Lansky.....Hope you didn't mind":D

I kinda want to get an Old Crafty now

If you haven't been watching, Sears has already undergone some "adaptations" recently including being merged with their old nemesis, Kresge (K-Mart). Craftsman is no longer an exclusive Sears branding. Craftsman tools can be found at K-Mart and quite a few hardware jobbers like Fastenal.

Besides working on building a collection of Sears catalogs, those logos I posted on the COSRUS site are the best I could come up with. Of course, the use on the knives of the Craftsman name does not go all the way back to 1927, but rather the years just preceeding WWII. Still though, if you look up the Craftsman tool catalogs and manuals on eBay, they pretty well confirm the rough dates on those logos.

Yes, Coleman did brand some knives even before they bought Western Cutlery in 1984. They operated the company as Coleman Western until it was bought by Camillus in 1991. I believe a company named "Acme" bought the Camillus and Western trademarks in the Camillus liquidation.

Here are a couple of recent Colemans attributed to Taylor via Seki City Japan:

The Old Crafty knives seem to have begun circa 1966. Not sure when they were discontinued. This style of packaging seems to suggest the 1970's-80's.
