Triad lock failure ! Ouch!!

As far as the lock is concerned it didn't suffer any damage, I had some sideways play when I first got the knife and as far as I could tell it didn't get any worse after the batoning. However the clip point blade is kind of thin and I did roll the edge a little, i was able to get it out with some sharpening and it works fine now, but I would think the tanto blade might do a better job as it might be thicker.

Good to know. Thank you. I guess if it didn't add any up-and-down play, the lock system was taking it fine. That's pretty impressive.

Yes I have the knife. It is nice. I haven't put any use on it, so will withhold comments until I have a solid opinion. Fit and finish is better than I expected. I have use for a serrated pocket knife, but that use starts in earnest in the spring in my yard cleaning up after the winter, so that's when the knife will get some honest miles on it. I don't EDC a serrated blade typically, so it won't get much pocket time in the next couple months.

Anyways.......a number of people have pleaded with me to close this thread, accused me of trolling, etc etc etc. I have learned that fanboys are a sensitive bunch regardless of brand, and fair enough. In respect of those wishes, and in the spirit of Christmas, I am not going to add anything else here. If I love the Code 4 enough to write a review, I'll post that here later in a separate thread, and add pics etc at that time.

Merry Christmas all, and a happy new year.

I've noticed here lately that the lock on my Cold Steel Black Rhino has gotten weaker. Not the lock itself, but the spring. There's almost no tension now when I depress the lockbar. This only occurred this last week. I can't imagine what happened for the spring to lose tension.

Cold Steel moderator: Is this something that can be fixed? Or is this knife now history?

No need to fear, all this means is you have broken in the Tri-Ad lock! You've done it! :excitement:

The weakening lock spring on the Black Rhino is not the lock breaking in. It has a design defect. Pure and simple.

The lock bar has no pocket, or hump to stop forward movement of the spring. It works it's way forward, which reduces the tension on the lock bar. It can become loose, and the edge of the knife can hit the lock spring and dent.

I sent one back, got a other with the same issue. I disassembled the knife, and used JB weld to fix the spring in place. First I added a bit of a hard bend to the pocket end, so it became a tight press fit. After cleaning the pocket and spring of oil, and roughing it up a bit, I uses the JB steel weld.

No movement in 5? Years.

First I tried a small groove in the lock bar. Don't do it! It will lessen the tension on the lock, and make it less secure. It changes the geometry.

If you look at the newer triad locks. This is not an issue. The lock bar has a bump that physically prevents forward movement of the spring.
