just want to some questions please. are the trolls just basic members the one that is free or have they paid for a membership?? what are the doing to earn them the troll position?? are they being mad towards a paying member??

Does not have anything to do with membership level. It is somebody that tries to stir things up with rude comments, personal attacks and things of this nature that have nothing to do with the actual thread topic being discussed.

We see them at all levels.

But one also has to remember that the derision "troll" is often hurdled incorrectly to insult anyone a person disagrees with. The fad these days is to call anyone you don't like a "troll." The trend is also to label as a troll anyone who raises a controversial or sensitive topic or takes an unpopular position.

A troll is someone who "stirs the pot," who starts a controversy, just because he enjoys watching the fight. The troll's goal is not to see the community benefitted by a healthy discussion of the topic but to enjoy watching the community torn apart by a fight. As such, a true troll is unhealthy to the community.

I've seen very few actual trolls on this forum. Mostly It's people incorrectly labeling others as trolls due to completely misunderstanding what a troll is. Gollnick gave a good explanation. Trolls get people riled up, emotional and mad for the lulz (derivative of LOL. Lol...lols....lulz...It's plural.) There are many troll tactics but not every troll is good at trolling. Making a controversial thread isn't trolling in and of itself. The intention matters. Trolls want to make people mad and cause butthurt.

The term is overused like crazy. A troll posts for the lulz. The media has ruined the term by using it so imprecisely. It's a specific thing and It's not inherently malicious although it can be. Some people use troll tactics as a means to debate and argue.

People are overly sensitive online. It's the internet, not real life. There is a different kind of online discourse. That's what real trolls tap into.

Ok thank you. when I post I post something about what is going on in that post. I have made mistake when I first got here and got ding for it. my bad I learn. I was mad but then I took a very long look at what I said and why I said it and moved on from there. thank you for your answers.

I'm pretty sure the term has nothing to do with monstrous creatures that tend to live under bridges. I believe it comes from a fishing term instead. In fishing, one trolls by dragging a lure behind a moving boat in hopes that a fish takes the bait. Trolling on the Internet originally referred to placing inflammatory or offensive postings on a forum in the hope that someone would "take the bait."

There used to be a guy on backpacker.com that seemed to consider it an art form. I found his posts to be hilarious. He would post something about how he had spent the afternoon killing rats in his shed with a shovel and the PETA crowd would go ballistic. I could always recognize it as he believably cast his bait. He always made me laugh when I saw it coming.

Anyway, way back then, trolling meant fishing for suckers.

Good observations above. I believe I see a fair bit of trolling going on here, not the well orchestrated stuff more the lonely sad-sack type offerings. That said, I believe I see just as many false accusations of trolling when the term used recklessly to beat down dissent. That is particularly despicable and cowardly. It's akin to how some Prima donnas exert control over their flock and get them to rally round their agendas with false accusations that they are being bullied..............Anyway, trolling predates what I suspect most people here conceive of the interwebz and networked computers as today. Here's a quick peek at some old school - http://s18.postimg.org/gved76pzc/GENESIS_115852656.jpg

all I wanted is to know what everyone was calling trolling. it is a person that make remarks to bad mouth another member to start trouble. thank you very much for you time and answers.

. it is a person that make remarks to bad mouth another member to start trouble?

Could be... but not necessarily. Troll is bigger than any one thing. It is an established pattern. Your have to look at a bigger picture, look for a pattern. There is no one post that defines a troll.

DC...:D

I can see where I may have misapplied the term "troll". In order to be a troll, there only has to be an intent to create disharmony or controversy. Apparently it doesn't matter whether the troll is telling the truth or lying. It only matters whether he or she is trying to "stir things up". By that definition, a truth-teller in a den of liars would be a troll from the liars' perspectives. Right?

Close. Supposing the liars are aware they are lying they are simply using the troll epithet to denounce the truth teller. But they know they are doing it.......................Run “correct” in a room full of “wrong” though, and the room full of “wrong” could genuinely perceive the “correct” as a troll and provoking agent.

Exactly. So whether someone accused of being a troll is a good thing or a bad thing depends largely on who that person's accusers are.

shakespeare's words become more intelligible : nothing is either good or bad, but our thinking makes it so.

Yep. You've got to love The Bard. Here's one of my favorite quotes:

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy!

:)

Being polite never gets old. But yes, it might be considered trolling in a Worrisome & Certain Forum.
