Trolls

shakespeare's words become more intelligible : nothing is either good or bad, but our thinking makes it so.

It's not just our thinking alone, but also how someone who wishes to say something unpopular or controversial chooses to do it. It's a lot in how you say it.

Bladeforums, not surprisingly, is a fairly pro-knife group. If a person came here wanting to advocate for the illegalization of knives, that would be an unpopular position. But would that fact necessarily make that person a troll? No.

If that person said, "You are all filth, stupid idiots for liking knives. And all knives should be illegal." then yes, that person would be on his way to trolldom.

And if someone asked politely, "But how would we do life-saving surgery withou knives?" and the OP refused to consider that argument, then he would move closer to the troll title.

Whether or not a poster is a troll does depend on what the group as a whole thinks, yes. But it also depends on how that person states his ideas and opinions, how he acts, and really what his apparent purpose and goal are.

In the hypothetical case of the person on bf.c advocating the illegalization of knives, I suspect that there would be 100% chance of a troll in that thread... but I give 50/50 as to whether it would be the OP or one of us. You can be a troll advocating the popular opinion too.

Being labeled a troll doesn't make one a troll. There has to be the intention. Someone who wants knives made illegal wouldn't be trolling if he wanted real duscussion. Someone who starts a thread about making knives illegal to get people mad and cause butthurt would be a troll. What they believe is irrelevant. What the group thinks is irrelevant. Trolling is about causing butthurt and amusement for the troll at the expense of others.

Most trolls are obvious and their posting pattern gives it away.

Does this style of trolling still work? "Steve Jobs uses a PC!" Hilarious! "Hitler's Dick!" Dumb, but funny.

Except for the fact that the handle is brand new, this was a skillful troll, he knew his audience:

Comments that are mostly emotionally loaded well placed one-liners designed as bait are good examples of a trolling. A lot of people mistakenly believe diametrically opposed views are trolls. Not necessarily. Deep disagreement can’t necessarily be considered trolling because their is no baiting, just a view. Big difference. If disagreement stands up to evidence and fact checking, then I find it hard to believe it was meant as bait. Trolls also commonly use a direct approach. They usually isolate and instigate towards users rather than view points.

That’s the basics of trolling. I’ve seen sophisticated trolling before. That kind of stuff tends to closely resemble propaganda but is tailor made for the internet forum platform.

The only effective countermeasure to deal with trolling is to ignore the troll. That’s why trolling will never go away, humans instinctively respond to controversy and titillation, the lifeblood of trolling. Anyway, have fun with the trolls.
