Trout success giveaway

Don't know if you used weighted flies at all but I know I always tore up some trout on a brown roach.

One of my favorite wets

Parachute Adams

Truthfully, the Parachute Adams probably should be the answer. But I use one, lost it to a big Brown trout, and then never fished another. In my book, and box, the Adams variants are the most important dry flies.

But no Adams pattern is the correct answer. :)

Rotte may have to narrow it down:D Dry fly or weighted?

Okay, ROCK6 is a f'n patriot of the first order and I figure I owe him something. So ROCK--everyone else close your eyes now--the correct answer, the killer fly, the maximum producer, was a DRY fly.

Now y'all need to realize that even dry flies can be fished wet. I once had a banner day down on the Arkansas river in Colorado fishing Elk Hair Caddis flies as wets. (Emergers maybe?)

But in this case, the top-producing fly was a dry fly that was fished dry. (A little silicone floatant helps.) This doesn't mean it was the best fly for this situation, but it was just the fly that I thought might work. And it did. And I fished it. A lot. Don't over think this and the Farmer Jade Blade will be yours! :D

Guess #3: The Renegade. A good general attractor fly.

Sylvan,

You may have the makings of a first class Angler. At least in my book. I don't go anywhere without a pheasant tail, an Adams parachute, an RS2, and a Renegade. And when I want to search the pocket water, I pull out a Renegade and hunt. Have no idea what it is supposed to be, but the thing just works. And on this trip it worked huge. I probably caught 20 fish with my little Renegade (I was fishing #18's and #16's). On one of my Renegades, the brown hackle got chewed off.

Congratulations! You have won a Farmer custom knife!

(Send me a pm with your details so I can ship it to you .)

Congrats Sylvan! Nice knife.

I started thinking match the hatch vs. attractors.

I'm just glad he said dry. I waited all day to post Bitch Creek!

Best contest ever Rotte!

I never saw your post that it was a dry. I was choosing between the Usual - a classic Adirondack pattern made from fur on the foot of a snowshoe hare, or the Renegade. I like to use the Usual when fishing Adirondack mountain streams but I thought the Renegade had a bit more western flavor to it so I chose that one.

This is the first contest I have ever won! I am grateful to you for offering the knife in this contest. I'll send you a pm with my info.

Thanks so much!

Funny story about trout fishing:

I was probably 7 or 8 years old and my dad had enrolled me in a local trout fishing competition. It was an adult competition but since it was at a trout farm is was a even field.

I remember it being really, really cold that day I competed. I cast into the lake and after a few minutes hooked a beauty. This thing fought me all the way to the shore. It was snowing and since I was so young the damned fish was pulling me into the water while I fought it rod and reel. i remember my feet sliding on the icy mud and Dad grabed a hold of me and dragged me away from the waters edge while no one was looking.

In the end I managed to drag ashore the heaviest trout in the competition. Dad was massively proud of me and the trophy was proudly displayed on the mantle for years, even though they'd misspelt my surname.

The strange footnote: we kept that trout in the freezer for quite some time but since we don't really eat fish it was eventually thrown out. Such a waste for such a gallant fish who fought valiantly and lost to an 8 year old boy.
