Trucks that don't suck

At 15, I've heavily considering a Jeep wrangler (in the 94'-97' range) as my first car. I'm surprised that the 4-cyl. 2.4L gets 17/19mpg (thats the Kelly blue book statistic anyway), but I figured I could live with it.

My only doubts are the reliability, anyone got any sure-thing good things to say on that? Would mean a big-deal to me. Thanks.

I had a Wrangler that was older than dirt, not sure what year, square headlights.

It had 130,000 on the 4 cyl. when I picked it up and it ran perfectly for me for another 15,000 before 5th gear went out. I then drove it for another 5,000 without 5th. :D

I hear alot about how they're not reliable but that hasn't been my personal experience.

That said, if I were looking to get an OLD vehicle, it would be a 4x4 Toyota pickup from the 80's. I ran two of them well over 200,000 miles without a hiccup.

Here is my 1976 Ford Ranchero. Its close to a truck right? ;) :D

Stock engine...

I recently rebuilt the engine. It was originally a 351 Modified and I converted the block to a 400. Literally the only difference is the crankshaft and pistons. The block is the same and shares nearly all the same parts as a 351 Cleveland.

Got a 1997 Toyota Land Cruiser. It has not spent one day in the shop (aside from schedule maintenance and new brake, which my cruiser goes through like saltine crackers). Strong, tough, dependable. Each time I think about selling, I think, "I could get at least ten more years out of her." I'll probably be saying that for the next few decades as I can't imagine getting rid of it.

My favorite truck and the vehicle I learned to drive on was an 87 GMC Sierra 4x4 with a 350 engine. Short Cab/short bed, wish I had that truck right now. Also, very easy to work on.

My favorite is a '94 white Ford Bronco. It's ok for off road excursions but where it excells is on those long slow speed chases down the highway. It comes standard with a place to stash your ESEE and a pair of 'too small' gloves.

Currently driving a 96 model Jeep Cherokee 4X4. I've rolled it up to 226,500 miles but only with a HELL of a LOT of maintenance. I swear I've replaced everything at least twice! I've enjoyed the truck but just don't know if I'd buy another one. You know what they say; If it's got tits or tires, it's gonna give you trouble!

Like others have said I'd choose a jeep. I'm currently in a 06 65th anniversary edition commander, and she hasn't let me down yet. I've had a few minor problems, but nothing I haven't been able to fix myself. Also a ton of info out there & the parts are cheap:thumbup:

i have a '99 ford explorer 4x4, with about 130k miles on it, and this car is a trooper. still going strong today, and has never need too much maintenance aside from scheduled checks, and the occasional fix up.

kfgk14,

That's a pre-'78 Ford Bronco (probably '75 or earlier because it doesn't have a recessed gas cap). I have a '75 that doesn't look anywhere near that nice but it is great on trails. Wheelbase was within a couple inches of that era's CJ7s and it had a very sturdy frame and drivetrain. Powered by 302 V-8 generally.

please don't tell me it was a 4.0ltr.. I had an '88 Camanche was probably the best vehicle I ever owned, strong, bullet proof.. last forever.......

I'm actually looking to sell one of my work trucks and get the cherokee 4x4 with the bullet proof 4.0 !!!

^^^I can not believe that little puddle was a problem for you! I do not disagree much with the mini van motor comment though. I love my J/K but would love it more if it had a little more power.

thats what you see around these parts....toyotas 4x4 with a lift kit....plenty of spare parts at the junkyards.

might try to pick one up soon.

I still drive my 2001 Tacoma with 110,000 miles and it takes a beating in the South San Juan mountains here in Colorado.
