True Upgrade for Omega Spring

I just replaced the broken stock omega spring in my mini-bugout with the Pacific Sons omega springs. They are noticeably thicker and the increased force on the lock bar is noticeable. IMO, the only issue is the increased friction between the lock bar and blade tang, when the blade is pivoting. I have been using Blue Lube on the blade tang, lock bar, and omega springs, but it hasn’t been very effective.

If I do get a significantly longer life from the thicker springs, I think the trade off will be worth it.

I think it is worth noting that fatigue life is significantly affected by scratches on the springs, abrasion, or corrosion is going to significantly reduce the fatigue life. So, while the materials used and the spring thickness matter, they are not the only variables to be concerned about.

If anyone can recommend a viscous oil or grease that works well to protect omega springs, without bunking up the knife, I would be much obliged.

I've had a standard 940 for a few years now and just recently purchased a 940-2. The 940 has always had a super smooth easy open and close fluid motion to it to the point I originally worried about retention in pocket coming open. As in maybe a thumb stud might catch enough to slightly open. Never had an issue. But the newer 940-2 has a much stiffer set of springs by far. I won't say it's difficult to open but I don't feel like I'm exaggerating saying it's more difficult to open. I have a small needle oiler that I refill with 3in1. I drip some on the washers and on each side of the lock bar. I should at this point confess I am a one hundred percent fidget freak. I tell myself it helps keep up manual dexterity but I also know I'm just inducing rapid wear and tear. Also, I would swear I've read some where that BM does have an upgraded Omega spring but I never could figure if they are a direct replacement or if they changed the whole design. I would also swear I read the new version is in the 710-FE which does clearly have a different lock bar.

Must have cursed myself because my original 940 just broke last night. I'm taking the low road and just ordered a set from Pac Sons. My struggle is sending something this expensive in for such a cheap part swap when I've had issues in the past with USPS losing packages.

I don't see what advantage a stiffer spring offers. Once the lock is engaged there is no force directed against the spring. A stiffer spring would just make the action harder to operate.

I agree. I just received a crossbar lock with lots of tension and I wish it were easier to operate.

Yes it feels really secure but the studs are sharp and having to apply that extra force is literally a pain.

I broke the spaghetti noodles.

No more broken noodles!!!

The springs from Pacific Sons do feel heavier but they look identical in thickness. Though they do feel very similar to my newer production 940-1. Couple of personalization changes as well. Now to wait for the thread lock to cure before I can really get a good re-acquaintance with her.

Based on the spring measurements of the flat springs from the new 710 from
, it sounds like increasing the diameter and reducing the spring rate is something that could be ported to older models as well. But ideally someone steps up and does them flat as well

I had one omega spring break on my Benchmade Bugout with Aimfront scales a few weeks ago. Ordered from Amazon: August Engineering omega spring replacement set (came with 3 pairs). I just installed them and the axis lock works great (feels just like it did before). I'll let you all know if/when they break.
