Truth or Myth? Quenching tank needs to be oriented north/south??

....The only caution would be that the shock wave propagates through the blade at 20,000 ft/sec, reaching the center in 3 nano-seconds. This may cause the blade to explode in a sort of sonic boom if the two waves collide in the center out of phase. In phase they would just cancel each other out quietly....

This is cause for great concern to me. If I accidentally grind a knife and create a standing wave consisting of the energy produced by martensitic migration, the laser beam that propagates our of the knife tip is liable to shoot right out to Uranus and back. And to be honest, I'm not thrilled at the prospect.

Nah, holes in the ozone are letting all the gravity out...that's why I can deadlift more than I could when I was younger. Less gravity
(More levity apparently)

Well in that case, I need a bigger ozone hole over my workshop. Somebody pass the jumbo '80s hairspray! :D

This is why I'm sending blades out for heat treat, the risk of vaporizing my work shed in a blast of magnetic dark matter fission is very real, especially with larger blades.

This thread has convinced me of many things....
One of which is that we, as a nation, need to have a day set aside where we can celebrate the men and women that heat treat our blades. Those unsung heroes that put life and limb at risk to make the carbon in our steel behave the way we want it to, need to be recognized and celebrated. It has been far too long that civilized nations have ignored the contribution that having properly hardened blades have had in our lives.
Imagine a world where carbon and iron were left to fend for themselves? Kitchen tragedies where mere tomatoes cause S35VN gyutos to shatter like glass or Havarti cheese causing Hitachi Blue #2 edges to roll? I just can't go there.
I hereby proclaim May 26th as National Heat Treater Appreciation Day. Let us as a people gather around the quench tank, 2 X 72 grinder, or Filing jig and have a moment of silence and say thank you!
