I've seen quite a few people try and tie the pig tail(hangmans)knot on their knives and fail. The general misconception seems to be that you have to start the wrap closest to the knife as possable in order to get it tight. This is not so; you can use a foot and a half of cord and really start your wrap far from the knife or in the middle of the cord. To determine how many twists or how long you want the tail, depends on how long you make the first reverse loop. I give it about a inch and half to two inchs. You will loose some slack when tightening. Also when closing or putting the end through the back loop, the twists don't have to come as close as possable to the end to make it tight. You can leave some extra room to make it easy to put the end through and just slide the twists up till tight. After tightening pull the opposite side end and slide the twist towards the knife. That simple! I hope my Pig-tail/Hangmans knot tieing mambo-baha-jambo lesson can help some.
