Recommendation? Trying to lead a friend in the right direction

S&N is good quality overall these days, providing similar value to the Council Sport Utility range with finish grinding that's usually nicer but also a more rounded bit than I personally like, stylistically (which is a matter of personal preference.)

this is very helpful. Do you mean rounded as in a convex bevel? Or rounded as in the curvature of the blade? ... or rounded as in contoured cheeks or bit?

... I just realized there’s lots of ways an axe can be curvy. Haha.

im asking partly for my friend but also out of genuine interest for myself.

Rounded in the profile shape of the bit. The edge is quite curved, as are the heel and toe, much as one might be accustomed to seeing on Michigan pattern axes. I generally prefer only a mild curvature to the bit (not quite straight, but closer to that than rounded) and a crisp heel and toe. But it's mostly a matter of personal preference.

So in the interest of further discussion...

Looks like council is doing a Forest Service Spec (FSS) reissue as a partnership with some company I'm not familiar with. Looks like 80-90 bucks gets you a 2 1/2 boys axe in 1080 steel with a mask and a composite wedge.

I like the sound of 1080, but my 1055 Estwing and the 1060 Flying Fox have been holding edges very well considering the abuse I've been putting on them. My old craftsman has been holding it's edge the best of the three, but who knows what that steel is?

What do you folks think? I'm inclined to think the 1080 is worth something, but the extras strike me as "meh" at best.

Can you please help me find the best Viking axe maker

Just FYI, FSS actually stands for Federal Supply System

Well if that's true, and I suspect you're right, I hope someone informs Whiskey River Trading. Not that it really matters what they call it- sometimes I think they get people on names, as if having Forest Service gear imbues some quality to the user. Kind of like "Government Issue".
