Trying to understand why, so let's discuss it

Ya see... there is a sound measured reason to have a one-hand opener with you! Yep, even if you aren't roofing or rock climbing......

Maybe my innerchild is a Mall Ninja?

I had a SAK for most of the first half of my life. It did everything, even cut through a radiator hose for a emergency repair on a road trip.

But one day a Co-worker had a assisted tacticol knife that he used to cut his apples at lunch. I don't know why but it just sparked something and I had to have one.

My first journey into collecting was getting a cheap assisted knife. Then as my knowledge grew I realized that assisted wasn't necessary but ease of one handed opening was.

I started off with fairly small knives. And I thought something with a 4" blade was just crazy. But then I got one and something clicked once again.

I can't go back to a slip joint or smaller knives.

And thus, someone said "you know, this would work better with a bigger knife." And the modern OHO tactical knife was born!

:D

Soooo, are you saying that the rise of the OHO tactical is directly related to the rise of Taco Bell???

Sounds like a good reason for Chinese carry out!

Not Taco Bell...their food is tiny. No need to cut it into any pieces unless being fed to babies.
A REAL burrito though from a good place...well, I'd still just eat the whole thing, but I could see the use of a longer blade.

The real use of a longer blade is for cake. :)
That extra blade length keeps it out of the pivot, making clean-up easy.
Seriously, two times while working security at one office building, I would not have had ice cream cake except for having a blade almost 4 inches long. The width of it helped "spatula" it out too. No kitchen around, no extra utensils, but thanks to my handy blade both of us working that shift got cake (someone leaving a birthday party had more than half an ice cream cake with them on each occasion; cake, but no utensils).

Would it help if I say that the modern one hand folder descended on to humanity from the heavens? :D

Nope...I'm sticking with all the stuff that descended on to humanity from the heavens in the early 1900's. You can keep all your fancy new heavenly gadgets. The old stuff worked fine....

Did you read any of the thread?
Yes, I did. Marketing has made some folks think a folding knife has to have a locking blade, (with a blade lock that will support at least 1.5 to 3x more than the user weighs) before it is safe to use, and you "need" the "latest and greatest" steel.

The same way Marketing made me think I need a car with AWD, ABS, Collision avoidance features, and a $#!+ ton of airbags when a Model T will “Get me where I’m going just fine, thank you very much.”?

Locking blades are definitely a safety improvement for a good many users and steels with better edge holding increase productivity/decrease downtime spent sharpening or, worse, struggling to continue on while using a dull/continually dulling blade.

So all your fellow knife nuts here who have explained the benefits they receive from modern knives are merely victims of marketing? You yourself have been tricked into thinking you benefit from the lock on that 110?

I love traditional slipjoints, don’t get me wrong.

But when I think back on how many times I had a SAK or Slippie unintentionally close or partially close while using it makes me appreciate a well built locking folder.

I don’t think either modern or traditional are better than one another. Just different with different features.

Pretty awesome really when you consider the vast amount of choices a person has.
