that's an intriguing design, and I think it would work well in a larger format too.
Nicely done Ryan:thumbup:

Very nice work Ryan! I really like how your style is coming along. :)

BUT.... :p as much as I like this knife, it looks like the hunter/little brother.... while the big brother/camp knife would be exactly the same but with a 10"-11" blade. ;) FWIW- this was meant as a friendly jab/suggestion that it would be super cool to see "big brother" not semantics. ;) :)

Like I said in chat that one night, Eugene, OR, is only 2.5 hours from Castle Rock. :D

You are making some great looking knives Ryan.
I really like this one.

BTW: does this mean Nick is coming to the OKCA show since he lives so close?

Thanks guys, great input...

Mark Nick is to that point where he makes knife shows come to him! :D

I finished up the sheath, thought this one out a little bit (Maybe too much). I have decided to keep this one and put the sheath and the knife through the paces.

I like wearing a Dangler Sheath when wearing a backpack with a waist strap, but hate them any other time. So I made this so it could be converted to a Belt sheath

The Antler tip was laying around so I used it to allow the lanyard to wrap to prevent losing the knife when it is a concern.

Thanks for your comments so far.

Very nice Ryan, I like everything about this one. The sheath is cool also.

Knife and sheath both look really good. I particularly like the execution of the handle. I don't doubt it's a very useful design - kind of a "tweener" in size though - big for a hunter, small for a camp knife. That's not a criticism - I know guys who prefer to carry a knife just that size for just that reason.

Thanks for the comments everyone I really do appreciate it.

So What I am hearing, and I agree with you all (Lorien, Nick, Roger) "Make it Bigger" I changed the name to title of this thread to "Tweener" cause I liked it. I was going to combine the names Camp and Hunter but that didn't come out right at all...
I am starting a larger version today.

I certainly think a larger version would be cool - but that isn't to say that the tweener isn't a real nice piece. I know the knife that Dan Farr carries most often for general camp use has about a 5 3/4" to 6" blade - and I recently got one from him around the same size. It'll do everything but heavy chopping, and has the benefits of light weight / ease of carry so you're more likely to actually have it on you when you need it.

Roger

By the way - using the lanyard to help secure the knife in the sheath - nice touch.

Thanks Roger! I agree this is a very useful size which is why I plan on keeping it for myself. I have had some requests to make a Camp Chopper and based on the input here I need to make it bigger. I think the handle is just about perfect, but the blade will be in the 10" length as suggested by Nick.

Glad someone got it... haha

I have my "Camp Knife" Take 2 - design drawn up and plan on profiling and grinding it out tomorrow, I would love to hear input.
Specs:
Steel Options: (I am leaning towards the thinner 52100)
1. O1 - 3/16"
2. 52100 - 1/8"
OAL: 16"
Blade: 9.5" (I just couldn't make it work @10" Every time it ended up looking like a Khukri, which isn't bad but not what I want for this build)
Handle: Not fancy, needs to be bullet proof (G10 or Micarta)

You will notice I put a mild re-curve to aid in chopping, still not 100% sure about this.
Ryan

couple thoughts;
for a full width grind, 1/8" seems way too thin
as much as I like the looks of a recurve, they're a pita to sharpen and I think you lose a little utility. Makes sense if you're making a weapon though.

Thanks Lorien, I always weigh your input heavily... I agree 100% on the recurve, I for some reason find them really sexy (Something about curves I guess). I worried about durability with 1/8 stock as well especially if it is a high grind as you said.

I played with a more aggressive design and am putting up a comparison

1. More of the Khukri style (Growing on me)
2. Same as previous posting

I agree that 1/8" is too thin. Aesthetically, I prefer version 1.
