Tweener Handle Thoughts

Is Flexxx still making liners? I have a feeling I am gonna crack the hell out of some DVD cases if I try to make them myself.

But even with liners, it would still be too short. Thanks for the photos Moose.
That's a tough one man. I'll have to go look my stuff over and see what has longer handles than the others. I wanna say my Fiddleback Hunter is a bit longer than some others but i'll hafta check.

I'm not sure. The DVD case adds 3/64 ths per side. I don't have a decimal equivlent chart on me just now. Make up a set, I'll beta test it for you.

I'll let ya know how it goes.....my last liner attempt failed somewhat miserably LOL

I find my 16 just doesn't fit my hand as nicely as I was hoping it would. Figured I'd try some liners on it but I couldn't find the proper screws to accommodate DVD liners. With the stock screws I could barely fit one liner in, and just got the first thread or two started, can anyone tell me what screws you're using to fit the liners? Still need to try making a set with some purple kydex Azwelke sent me... Peanut butter jelly time...

Put the handles on, sans liner. Crank down when you tighten it, go about 1 and half full turn past tight, the screw head will bury itself in the zytel, and give you enought threads to completely fill the nut.

...interesting. I will try this, hope I don't strip the nut :p.

Hardware store, get a longer set.

The choice is yours, I have a few spare sets of hardware laying around and handles too. hey

They don't call me Moose cause of the large antlers.

The call me Mr. Moose because of those. :D

I think the liners flexx has are made from those thin nylon binder covers.

Liners from CD cases are not as easy to make. I suppose you could use a flush bit and router the plastic to the tang. I might try this.

I made some once from 1/8" thick rubber sheet. Use a narrow exacto blade and keep it wet so it doesn't stick to the rubber as you cut. Punch the holes and sandwich the rubber sheet between the tang and handles then do the cutting.

Yep, you can always get a longer set and use a sander or bolt cutters to shorten the bolt to the appropriate length.

Yeah they are kinda to short for my hands to. I might be taking mine to a grinder again to see what I can do to the handle. There's got to be an easy way to add some length to it.

I find they fit me quite well. I wouldn't mind a little bit thicker grips but with a variety of gripping methods I find them comfortable. My only real complaint was that they felt a bit slick so I took the woodburner to them and made them a tad bit rougher. Of course I have a bit of stubby hands and wear a size medium glove.

I put some g10 liners on my BK16 and it helped somewhat. I'm thinking I might just use .060 kydex in the future, though.

Dubs, if you check out my 15 thread, what Konabadger did with my handles would easily accommodate your needs with some small amount of grinding before he fit the handles. that would make the handle longer fatter and remove the nub and his prices are darn reasonable. Plus you would have an even sexier knife when it was all said and done and it would still be a Becker.
Heck if you would Like I would be willing to to the grinding myself no charge and then you could get someone to make handles that cover the exposed tang at the bottom like mine was done, giving you some more gripping surface.
Just let me know. I would hate to see you get rid of your tweeners if we can fix it. Isn't that half the fun of owning Becker's? The Modding?

And you call yourself a Kydex bender! We should throw you out of the club! :D

Would you think .80 kydex would be too thick for liners on the tweeners? I want thicker...but I am thinking that may be too much, I may try a set anyways, and a set from DVD cases too.

I find the .060 to be just about right. I'll throw a few pieces into your package if you only stock .080. You can rough trim them with shears, sandwich them with the normal scales and trim real close with an X-acto knife. Finish sand with 220 wet-or-dry (wet) if needed.

I've also been using Rustoleum spray on bedliner on the scales or more grip. It stays on well and and adds some traction.

When my 15 arrived I found that the handle became smaller closer to the blade. That tended to give me the feeling that my hand was sliding forward which I was not too crazy about. The solution was to pick up some Saint micarta which makes them a little fatter with less forward contour. If the overall handle is too short for you that would be another problem that may be solved by custom grips.

I bought a set of the Saints G10 for the shorts, My first impression was really heavy and well put together but I didn't like that triangular shape , Fat at the rear spine and very thin up at the front part of the spine on the blade side. I'll make em' work, add a liner and reprofile them.

I wear XL to XXL gloves. I was surprised to find the tweener scales on my 16 only a little too small for my hand. I think the contouring is brilliant. A little slippery, though.
So I stippled 'em (like a peanut!) to increase traction, and created some .060 chocolate kydex liners to thicken 'em up. Sure did the trick - may actually be a teensy bit large now.
Looked and looked for 5/8 8-32 socket head cap screws to put it all together, but couldn't find any. Picked up SS hex nuts and 3/4" stainless screws, trimmed 'em to size, and it went together quite well.

I didn't get all the flash off the kydex, so I took it all apart and sanded 'em smooth on all faces and sides. Took a chunk out in one spot, and now they're a little smaller than the scales all around. Plus, putting it back together, I cranked down too hard on one of the screws (per Moosez post above, actually,) and pulled it partway through the grivory scale. Since I already had longer screws, now that one's too long again. You won't strip the nut, but I don't feel like there's enough zytel material left underneath now. Should have left well enough alone.
Instead,
I made my first run of "mycarta" - alternating layers of brown and oyster jute burlap in Bondo fiberglass epoxy resin. Should be cured enough to work tomorrow. The plan is to follow the factory scales' curves as closely as my clumsy tools and self let me - but maintain a slightly thinner forefinger groove so the first strap on the nylon sheath will still snap.
Started a fresh set of liners - keeping them oversize until final finish this time.
( OF - 3/64 is a smidge less than .050. I think it would work brilliantly.)
Made a giant sandwich - 2/ea of .010 aluminum, 1/32 (.030) white HDPE, 1/32 beige HDPE, and .060 chocolate kydex between the (nearly) stock black scales, for shaping with the Dremel.
I'm thinking the beige and aluminum should look great against the cliched tang and 2-tone brown scales - but I'll try a few combos for size and color before settling on anything.
As I get closer, I'll try to steal the wife's camera again for a few decent pics.

Overall, I could use the scales a little longer, but for that size knife I don't feel I need 'em bigger. If I did, I'd get an oversize set of micarta, bring them forward to flush with the ricasso/choil line, flow down the guard, and lose the pommel slot.

The Mycarta mentioned above is done. I started a new thread on rehandling my 16. Take a look if you're interested:

I ground it kinda big, so liners are unnecessary. I have 'em all started and rough-shaped, though.
