Tweeners are fricken sweet.

I've put these up elsewhere, but this thread could benefit from some in-hand shots too. :)

I see from the previous post that people have somehow gotten their hands on those...
I wonder if sexual favours were involved :D

These are some sweet little knives. Too bad they're 5 - 6 months away. Any chance of a prototype pass around ... hmmmmmm ??? Early release for Beckerheads ???? (ala the BK 10 ? ) .... LOL

Hey, I can ask can't I ? :D

I'm thinking I'll need about four of the mini-bk5's to serve as steak knives in the Becker 8 Piece Kitchen Knife Block I dream of constructing one day.

Seriously, I love the look of each one of these. Can't wait till January!

Hey Folks,
I wasn't going to say anything because my opinion is probably of no importance to Ethan or Ka-Bar but I can't keep it to myself: I think that the Tweeners - especially the drop point version - have a great potential. Of course I only saw pictures but I'm convinced that the ergonomics will be beyond awesome - better than any Esee 3 or 4.

But in my opinion there are two aspects that might keep these knives away from being perfect:
1. These knives need to be full flat ground. No sabre grinds or at least a really really high sabre grind. I expect these knives to be nothing but perfect slicers so there is really no need to enhance the stability of the "backbone" by adding a sabre grind. Of course I would love to see thin edges and thin blades. Go for a slicing monster :)!!!! For abusive tasks you can use your bk2/bk7/...
2. Maybe it's just me but I guess most guys around here prefer micarta over grivory. So please consider an additional version with micarta scales. Of course an aftermarket solution is better than nothing but it is somehow annoying. Esee knives come with micarta or g10 handles and I have never seen someone asking for grivory or nylon or zytel handles for their Esee blades.

Concerning my first point: i'm a hobby knife maker and I know what i'm talking about. Never had any problems with full flat grinds and the new mark 1 demonstrates that ka-bar can make it happen!!!

I'm really looking forward to the tweeners. I have never been so excited about an upcoming knife - and i have seen a lot :).

By the way: this post was written on an iphone. Maybe this emphasises how much I care about the tweeners :)!!!!

Cheers,
J5

I was lucky enough to use them all. I love the ergonomics and can appreciate the thought that went into the designs. They feel fantastic in the hand with the micarta scales. Hopefully the grivory won't change the balance and "feel" too much and if it doesn't, I think they will be Ka-bar's top sellers.

For some reason, I'm craving a Triscuit with some sharp cheddar.

these are definitely a welcome addition. Ill get a few as soon as theyre available.

Here's what I've been able to gather. The drop point knives are a go anywhere do anything type knife, though I agree a flat ground option would be nice, having the knife without the added steel would greatly reduce the strength of the knives thus removing the first, fan favorite, feature on the knives. Near indestructibility. There are 2 "niche" knives, for say, with the clip point and mini mag. One for skinning and one for camp cooking. Although if you tried to force either knives through wood I doubt you'd have much problem at all.
Secondly the micarta. This has been brought up a lot actually. The point with this is to keep the knives inexpensive without sacrificing quality. Any Becker with micarta scales and a kydex or leather sheath will often run you the exact amount, if not less, as any Esee, Busse, or Swamp Rat. The point is that it's YOUR CHOICE. If at all, the only thing Ethan Becker and Ka Bar could do better in this catagory is to make better aftermarket sheaths. Something like the spec ops stuff would be great and still inexpensive. But then Ka Bar has to modify the facility or hire sub contractors, etc. It gets busy and time consuming. Also, i bet if you asked anyone associated with Ka Bar I bet you'd hear they like the fact small businesses and hobbyists, such as skilled men like mywifethinksimcrazy, doing stuff like that for them. but that's my 2 cents from what I've read around.

The more I see that mini camp the better it looks! That will be my first one for sure.

snip...

so on 1) why do you think they are going to be sabre ground? afaik, two will at least be flat ground... and the magnum camp if anything would be a (high) flat saber. no hollow grinds here. the mini magnum camp is quite the slicer. nothing to fear.

and 2) by default, as a rule, grivory is it, and most people are happy. micarta is an option. if you want it, you buy some. it's not to everyone's liking. the option is buying some - reasonable price too i expect.

i bet if ESEE offered grivory/etc, someone might actually buyt it ;)

just my two and a half cents

I'm sure I'll get the micarta just because, but toooj said the grivory, due to it's small size, is going to be solid. That's a nearly indestructible chunk of thermoplastic.

Wow, I didn't know the grivory was going to be solid. I wonder how, or if that affects the balance.

Speaking of grinds, I know it's not KABAR's style but a Becker Scandi grind would be a must have.
