Twenty 3" EDC3, Delta 3V

sorry ahead of time for a long post ... I just wanted to share my thoughts ... and maybe encourage some who have been frustrated recently ...

I've been into guns and knives and anything to be outdoors since I was old enough to be turned loose ... and I have dealt with many dealers ... many companies ... several custom gunsmiths and some custom knife makers ...

and I won't claim to know half of what some do ... but I can say finding CPK not just the knives but the CPK team ... they are as good as it gets with communication ... transparency ... and going above and beyond for their customers ... whether you are a first time buyer or an old standby of the subforum ...

and I know coming into the subforum new can be a bit overwhelming at first to some because there is such a loyal following and many that frequent here have become good friends and it feels like home ...

I also understand frustration of not getting in on a sale or two or three in a row ... but I encourage anyone new coming in ... to join in ... be patient get to know the people and 99% of the regulars will go out of their way to help out ...

and Nathan and Jo and the whole CPK team will go the extra mile trying to make sure everyone that wants a knife gets one ... they try to meet demand and sometimes open preorders for highly desired models to give everyone that chance to get the knife they want ...

but preorders take time and money up front which as Nathan has stated many times isn't his perfered method for sales ... and understandably so when you see how much hassle some companies have had with that sale model ...

I love to see all the interest in CPK knives as I think they are not only some of the best knives available as IMHO probably the absolute best value going ...

so please don't get discouraged ... and hang out and get to know the CPK team and the regulars ... it may take a bit longer than ordering a production knife from a dealer ... but it is well worth the wait ...

and trust that Nathan and the group as a whole will help find ways to get as many people as possible the knives they want ...

I will gladly help anyone in anyway I can ... as will most regulars ...

Thanks again to the whole CPK team ... you are appreciated!

- JJ

How about......You want to buy a Carothers blade, here are the RULES.

You are allowed ONE e mail with your ironclad order specs. ANY changes later on, your order is cancelled.

You e mail us inquiring about "WHEN will it be DONE"? Your order is cancelled.

You fail to PAY for the knife when done, THEN it goes into a weekly sale.

I understand how you feel. I understand the optics may not be great to newcomers.
I’ve also been around long enough to know it’s just optics and people who keep trying do end up getting what they are after.
Some recent examples I can think of are N NiceNife , @inspector-callahan, @halm, @Hundred Acre Wood, Fullflat Fullflat ...
I could keep going. Some of these members were initially frustrated. Some got a proxy. Some kept at it and scored on their own.
It may be confusing at first, but in most of the sales there are enough people engaging that even without the proxies and speed test posts you will have to wait minutes to figure out if you actually won. Your post may read #17 but you may actually be 46th in line once the software catches up.
I would say keep at it.
Good luck!
What he said!!!
Having just acquired my first CPK on the secondary market a few months ago, and being blown away by Nate’s D3V and edge geometry, I am certainly still green to the CPK subforum. I’m not a collector, but I use a knife every day, often harder (more abusively) than most manufacturers would consider ‘normal use’, so Nate’s stuff fast became a must have for me. After at least 4 or 5 unsuccessful attempts to buy in the Friday sale thread, I expressed my concern about never scoring to my fellow CPKers on this subforum, and the response I received was overwhelmingly helpful and kind. Many excellent & friendly members chimed in with not only welcoming words of encouragement and wisdom, but even technical advice and computer tips, all in the generous spirit of helping a newb like me land the kit I’ve been needing. They surely inspired me not to give up. Within a week of getting so much sage advice from these good folks, I was able to secure a spot in the next sale, and also learned of the other channels through which to acquire CPK stuff. Everything Cap’n Smudge Cap’n Smudge said is facts!..and I personally appreciate him (and many others here) for taking the time to try and give some perspective and friendly guidance to those of us that need it. Like he said, if you really want it, you’ll be able to get it. Hang in there undeterred, and remember that this community itself is it’s own greatest resource.

There's no problem with you starting to produce your own knives, and using that business model. It could work very well.

...does give the appearance that there are hired guns for sale...
I just wanted to quickly reply to this:
AFAIK, while there is a vibrant proxy system - where newbies are regularly welcomed and helped - I have never witnessed or heard of anyone selling their services to score a knife. I think it would be counter to the ethos of this community and I’m sure Nathan would come down hard on anyone caught trying it.
Anyway, the most glaring issues appear to have been addressed and I hope that everyone that wants a CPK gets what they desire.
Best wishes and good luck to all!

So with all due respect, if you want to disabuse others of that notion then have the proxies order the knives in their own names and work out the sale with whomever they're acting for privately. if i really want a knife and want the best chance at getting one i shouldn't have to seek out said vibrant proxy system to increase my chances. Far more importantly ban speed tests. Everyone who gets through on a speed test is taking a connection away from someone else who may actually want to buy a knife. some people will no doubt continue this practice and simply not post cute disclaimers but at some point hopefully come to realize that by speed testing they're actually taking something away from someone else. I'm sure you guys wish i'd never joined this discussion but this is what your community looks like from the outside.

Read more, post less... A true golden rule to go by and I'm self deprecating enough to now know that I should've listened to this sage advice when I was a newbie myself and heavily into another maker's routine with my eyes blindfolded (by myself)... Ah being green and thinking that we know it all.

Spend some more time in the CPK subforum and learn that the CPK folks are really going above and beyond to make it happen for the none regulars too. Ofd you say that you do not have the time to do so, it's understood but this is a community of knife nuts / zealots and enthusiasts who whether like it or not, follow some unwritten code of conduct to help those who contribute to their community and subforums.

As stated, my comments were never in anyway a knock on CPK. but rather upon the mechanisms of the forum itself and how it appears to a disinterested party. Does being self-deprecating and sage and going above and beyond include telling newbies to spend more time reading than posting and referring to them as green and knowing it all? As a matter of fact i'm thinking that because of this particular comment from you, sir, that i will not in fact be a part of this community anymore. Enjoy your community. i may try to buy a knife again at some point in the future but i will NEVER post again.

It’s unfortunate that is your take away as I was hoping that you would actually take the time to join the CPK sub to read and then to participate when you feel that you have acquainted yourself with the layout. If not, I hope that you still enjoy your CPK because I don’t want be an impediment to you enjoying and using Nathan’s great knives :)

Being so self deprecating you should perhaps realize that my takeaway from your comment was a direct result of your condescension to put the newbie in his place. You can dance around the semantics if you want and claim that you were speaking generally, but we know i irritated you and that was your response. Again, the knives and the company are awesome. The forum has clearly devolved to benefit those who know how to play the game. not to level the playing field for everyone wanting to purchase a knife. Your comment was my tipping point after others and even worse PM's. It's your "community". you can have it. But i wanted YOU to know that you were the last straw.

Since someone tagged me, I’ll share my thoughts. I’ve been around for a couple of years trying to figure out how to get a CPK. The regulars always said the same thing to the newbies. They scoff at your dumb questions, they redirect your questions to older threads and tell you to “read more”, and they constantly upsell themselves and reinforce that they have “street cred” around here. A year ago, I found the CPK community to be extremely toxic and never came back. Just follow Nathan and Jo, and ignore the rest.

Fast forward a year to now, I found that there were a few regulars that were extremely helpful in trying to get me, who was a complete stranger, a FK2 after 3 failed attempts at these crazy sales. I’m extremely grateful to those folks. I love my FK2 and to earn one, you may need to learn how to navigate the de-railed threads and toxicity.

On the bright side, the regulars with this self-proclaimed “street cred” help out around here by chasing away newbies who would otherwise create more internet traffic and become customers.

I wish that I had more helpful tips, but the reality is that I got lucky I slipped past the toxicity and ran into the helpful ones.
