Now we are talking!! This is something i could do here!! I see some c clamps for 10 bucks or so and i have some chopped up 2x4 pieces around that i could screw to my wooden table!

Thanks for this idea bud!!

It isn't very elaborate, but it should get the job done. The Shop Talk subforum is a seemingly endless supply of information about knife making.

this.

BTW, we're having a nice dive on an unexplored seamount off the BVI right now. Tune in if you like rocks, corals, and sponges. :)

Are yall looking for something specific in the core samples??

Off-topic. Onions soaked in jalapeno juice and vinegar is better than apples. Cauliflower as well. Yumm. An excellent snack.

bacteria and microorganisms, I think. Basically they want to find out what lives in the mud. Our chief sci on this leg is a 'benthic ecologist'.

I had to Google "benthic."

That's a word-of-the-day I haven't come across before.

Awesome stuff.

I bet the cure to lots of "incurable" considered diseases lies in the ocean somewhere. And I always kind of thought that since lots of ocean life lives for so long it must hold some secrets that could make humans live longer as well. Of course im just talking out my butt... But it would be awesome.

Have you guys ever found a new species of organisms?

I generally think (IANAD) that 'cures' to diseases are not found objects, like video game keys. For instance, google how the FDA's food pyramid has been killing our generation... But certainly there is a TON to learn.

Yes, we've found a couple new species. Usually such things end up being undocumented varieties of something already known, and not super exciting to the lay person (myself included). Last season we did catch a few seconds of video of a squid that had never been photographed before. It blew by rather agitated and inked the camera. :-)

Typically it takes months to determine if a new species has been found, and that's if if we get a sample. Our biological samples go to the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology for identification and stewardship. From there, scientists can visit them or check out sub-samples for whatever they need.

hey guys. i've been slammed at work. it has been a while since i have been in snark. i am so very happy it is friday.

WW you are slipping... i figured you would be up to at least 15k by now... its been a good 2 weeks or more since i have been in here. :)

Daizee,

Its my personal belief that every illness, not old age, can be cured by something on this planet, we just havent figured out how or what to use... YET. It may not be a "found" object, but it takes finding out how to do it with the resources we have. And im no doctor either, far from it LOL but like i said thats my BELIEF. I believe mother nature provides all we need, but she isnt very willing to just hand us the answers.

Just like i wrote above about coconut water being able to be used as plasma in emergencies.. This is something we had to find out or learn. There could very well be a plant or organism that could be used somewhere in the world that would reduce tumors quicker than anything we have ever seen. I dont know for sure of course... But i believe in nature.

And i would be pretty stoked about finding ANY new organism. Everything new we find proves there is more to learn! About 46 new species were discovered every day in 2006 alone. Thats a lot of new species, yet there are likely MILLIONS more.

I said it before but ill say it again.. Your job is bloody awesome.

Oh ya.. BWP hooked me up with the recipe... I can make my own resin for handles! I'm a little excited..

Fartin' around with GIMP tonight. Been awhile:

I'm not on the team any more, I played in 6th and 8th grade but it's just not my thing, which is funny because I'm one of the largest kids in my school, I'm much more of a baseball guy
