Tyrant Bowie Prototype Run- Z Tuff

I had a Busse TG14 one time after spending lots of time and money to acquire it. Ended up selling because there was no finesse in its build… just a chunk of shaped metal. Heavy. Unwieldy.
I hope this Tyrant bowie can demonstrate skillful application of advancements with builds/ materials and not just rely on heft.

Its been a long time coming, but we've finally begun work on the Tyrant Bowie Prototype. To say I'm hella excited is an understatement. Just look at this thing!

The goal is to have a small run of 15 prototype blades ready within two months time. To speed up the process and get this thing moving we are using the Fell Beast handle just like the original prototype had. I think the dimensions fit perfectly into the overall design and I think everyone will LOVE the new handle. I spent countless hours getting the curves and dimensions just right and I think it really shows. I'd put this handle up against anything out there in terms of comfort and ergonomics.

These are starting life on the waterjet next week as .290 thick Z tuff which we will finish down to around .250-.265ish thickness.

A skeletonized tang, fuller, high grind + swedge will keep them light as a feather.

Final specs will be:
Steel: Z Tuff @ 61+ RC
~.250-.265 thick
13.4in blade
19.2 in overall
2.5in tall at the wides point

Truly the king of all bowies

While the price is well outside my comfort zone, I have to say that I really like this design! I’ll live vicariously through other’s pictures which I hope they post.

My CNC guy has been really backed up at his shop so these have been delayed. He said he is aiming for the end of the month for completion. I saw the blanks when I went up to his shop and they are NASTY. This will be the biggest dang knife you have ever seen.

As long as there are no issues with the prototypes and production goes OK, I will go ahead and do a pre-order for these and let everyone pick their options. I'll run alot more handle materials and have a few finish options for the Tyrant.

I’m interested but have a few questions to make sure I have things right. The 15 that are hopefully dropping by the end of the month will be for sale and are prototypes. Once those drop, there will be a pre order with more options. Would you be able to provide more info on the prototype vs the pre order, to determine when to pull the trigger. Also on the picture it appears to have a hidden tang, if it’s going to share the fell beast’s handle will it be a full exposed tang.

The prototypes are a model that is used to test machining and HT. They are going to be available for much less than the production run. There may be no differences at all between the prototypes and production run. Typically, we do a run of 10-15 prototype blades test out the design, machining, and HT. From there, we may make small changes for the full scale production run. If the prototypes are good and there are no issue with them, we will keep the formula exactly the same. The main things I am looking for are
1. Ease of finishing by hand- are the bevels and fuller able to be nicely cleaned up on a grinder for a high end finish
2. Is the weight and balance good, do we need to increase the height of the grind or the length of the fuller to make things feel right
3. HT- do we need to change anything to control warpage or improve performance

The scales are the same as the Fell Beast and do not have any exposed tang on the back.

So how much less than $900 will they be?

Hi Hunter, I don't think I have commented on your work or designs before. But I just saw this thread, and wanted to say your design looks excellent and I think anybody should be proud to own one of these.
Thanks David that means alot!

I’ve written elsewhere about what I think of Busse. INFI has some great qualities, not least ease of field-sharpening. But suffice it to say that the more you spend on a Bussekin, the less likely you are to get a functional tool, and the more likely to get something designed primarily to look cool and weapon-y, while being very poorly weighted and balanced to be an actual weapon.

I wouldn’t expect Hunter’s knives to be more finessed in terms of fit & finish, but I would expect them to be much better thought out and tested as functional blades.
