Do you understand how tariffs work? The importer pays them, not the exporter. That wouldn't keep prices from going up at all, and--in fact--would do the very opposite.Economists argue about all sorts of things, but one thing they're in agreement on is that tariffs are not a good idea for boosting the US economy.

^This.

If anything, increasing tariffs often results in price increase of domestic products (i.e., it hurts consumers).

Can always "roll your own" ;)

Yeah, I’m sure all the equipment, materials, and the value of one’s time and labor involved is probably less than buying a Spyderco.

... Not trying to put down the practice of making your own knives, but, the introductory cost and time investment in making a knife (especially a folding knife, much less an OTF) is pretty steep compared to buying a Combat Troodon.

Back on topic: I still see this as an overall potentially positive thing, even disregarding the essentially inevitable nature of price increases. This opens up price ranges for new makers and new products, allowing for more options and healthy competition. Budget lines will likely expand, new companies will be able to compete with established brands, etc. That’s the dream, anyway.

Why is inflation (increase in the supply of money) addressed by yet more inflation?
If large corporate entities paid tax at the same rate I do, then I and others like me (most people) wouldn't be paying nearly so much tax. Seems like a real problem to me.
Fix that then I could buy more Spydercos.

Dude. I have a business degree. I grok this stuff. It is not nearly so simple as you seem to believe it is.

I wasn’t sure to whom this post was addressed, but if it was me my response is: there’s nothing simple about any of it, but if we can’t get the simple, small details worked out we’ll never start on the complicated ones. As a pessimist and a realist, the American Empire is being dismantled and slowly shipped to China. Once the super wealthy have renounced their us citizenship they will be surprised, after a brief honeymoon period, that Chinese citizens pay 45% income tax. The penalty for evasion is not a few months at a country club fed, but confiscatory fines and hard labor.

Lots of good ideas in this thread...I guess. I'm just a dumb hick southwest of French Lick, so large words like "tariff" and "gold standard" confuse and frighten me. I don't really have a leg to stand on in this conversation, but I was always under the impression that businesses were not in business to do purposely stupid things like raising prices for no reason. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that the price increases fall into one or more of three categories:

Cost of goods and production are going up (wages, raw materials, etc). Funny thing, employees. I've got a few of them and I'll be doggoned if they don't want to keep making MORE money the longer they spend working their jobs! Strange, I know. My dad pulled in a good wage of about $11,000 in the early 1980's when we expanded into this business. You wouldn't believe what that old buzzard is shaking us down for these days! It's only been 35 years!

The companies raising their prices want in invest in new equipment to bring out new products down the road and/or need to replace outdated and worn machinery. Well, I think they just need to be a bit easier on them dies! Don't drop 'em so dang hard all the time! New products are silly. All y'all get a Buck 110 and be happy about it!

The companies think the market can support the increase. Can you believe it! They actually think that in America you can produce something then have the nerve to turn around and sell it for the maximum profit you can get for it! I've also heard grumbling rumors that if that price is more than you want to pay that you don't have to buy it and can look for an alternative! Absurd! Businesses making money, consumers feeling like they have a right to choose...

Does that apply to corporate tax evasion too?

The nerve of some people!

it is what it is....complaining here about chinese tariffs and whatnot wont change a thing with makers putting in price increases.

most knifemakers have raised prices on new products....not all but most. frustrating as consumers as we dont always get wage increases but it is what it is. makers aren't gonna read this and say yeah we didnt need that money lets give it back. business doesnt work that way. if they didnt need it they wouldnt do it. the expense of trying to get new customers kill the margins they might have made in the increases.

btw netflix raised their prices and so did amazon on prime ....bet the knife makers wished they had the kinda margins those two have.:)

"... More Price Increases Coming in 2018"?!

Surely you were not expecting prices to remain the same, or price decreases, were you? :)

Hint: Expect more than one price increase this year on everything, and for that trend to continue for the rest of your life. :(

Based on my 62 years of "life" on this rock, I can assure you that whatever it is you want to buy in the future, it will cost more then than it does now. :(
I remember when you could buy a NEW 1973 Camaro for $3,800. Today, that is not even a good down payment for a new Camaro ... or for a restored 1973 Camaro, for that matter.

35¢ for a loaf of Wonder Bread ... 50¢ for a gallon of milk ... 5¢ for a full size candy bar or a bag of Raman Noodle Soup ... 10¢ for a 12 ounce bottle of soda pop ... 18.9¢ for a gallon of (leaded) regular gasoline ...

I'll never see prices like those again :(

to be fair i'd rather pay 1.5 euro's for a liter of unleaded than 15 cents for a liter of leaded fuel.

well not every price increased is ''needed'' like you mentioned a succesfull company can increase their price as they see fit.
Apple would be the perfect example, they price the product not at what it's worth, but what they think consumers are willing to play for it.

Forced technology transfer is surprising to American companies doing business in China? Did they think that the tech would just be hacked?

I learned in another thread that Condor instituted MAP pricing. Their product line has been increasing in price noticeably over the last couple of years.

Added: I generally expect a price increase as good companies typically increase their employee wage rates. Also, it appears that knives made a bit of a come back last year in terms of sales in general.

I have also noticed Condor prices rising dramatically from only a year or two ago. Example, their primitive bush knife used to be around $50 a year or two ago, now around $75.

What if you knew how to cheaply extract and recycle the lead?
i still wouln't want to have the cheap leaded fuel on the marked.
there's still going to be way too many people that would just go for the cheap fuel and slowly poison everyone.

on the subject of tax, you guys living in the US are still lucky when it comes to knife prices and taxes.
we pay over 50% in taxes on knives and that's ontop of the 15 to 30% higher prices to start with.

a grey Delica 4 is going to cost you 123$, 134$ for the black.

Used to be able to buy full sulphur diesel from Iran; 90 gallons cost 3grams 95%brazilian gold (Assuming my arithmetic is sound, which it often isn’t lately)
