on the subject of tax, you guys living in the US are still lucky when it comes to knife prices and taxes.
we pay over 50% in taxes on knives and that's ontop of the 15 to 30% higher prices to start with.

What country is that? Also is that a sales tax or an import fee?

What country is that?
Holland, but this is about the same for any EU country and seems to be similar for Australia.

21% VAT, then about 5% on the new price, and another 21% sales tax again on the price after those.

so if the knife costs 100 to start with it's 153.70 after taxes.

but like i mentioned before, retailers here use a much higher markup which add's to the price.

I know Benchmade increased prices on at least the Freek. It was at $110 when I bought it and now it's just shy of $130.

How much does it cost you guys to buy a glock17? I know you also have to buy a silencer because the noise is excessive.

All this makes me glad I am in a reading about vs. buying phase in this hobby. With enough blades of many shapes and sizes to last multiple lifetimes, I am more concerned about ultimately cashing in than accumulating more. Hmmm, maybe this pricing thing has a gold lining for me.

to be fair i'd rather pay 1.5 euro's for a liter of unleaded than 15 cents for a liter of leaded fuel.
That 18.9¢ a gallon was in 1971. Unleaded gas was not invented until 1973, when the 1974 cars came out. (1974 was the first year of catalytic converters and emission controls. Catalytic converters and leaded gas do NOT get along or mix.)
Leaded gas has not been sold in the USA since roughly 1978 or 1979.
Cool true story:
The town I grew up in replaced all their squad cars in 1974. Chevy Impalas, with a 454 engine.
My great uncle owned the shop that worked on the cop sleds.
After 3 months not a one of those new cop cars would go over 35 mph.
The officers were putting leaded gas in them, and clogged the catalytic converter.

I remember a lot of people were bypassing the catty so they could save the few cents and continue using leaded. Probably why inspections began and registration fees raised

honestly couln't tell you.

it's not an item you can just buy off the shelf like shrooms.

You can buy shrooms off the shelf inHolland? I know cannibis is legal there, I didn’t know psilocybin was! Is opium legal there?

I used to work at a gas station, a Merit, and leaded has was gone in 1990.

It sucked for me cause my 66 Dodge Coronet ran like crap on unleaded.

Well not really, it's legal loophole rather.

Shrooms used to be legal till i think 2007.
The government then passed a law banning phsycedellic mushrooms.

By definition a mushroom is the reproductive organ from a fungus that grows above the ground.
The reproductive organ from a fungus that grows underground is by definition a truffel.

You can probably see this one coming by now.

The law only banned mushrooms not truffels. So the guys farming the mushrooms tweaked the growing procces a bit to make them grow as truffels instead.
Which are now still sold.

I guess the government does't care because they never cause any real trouble. Or at least not frequently.

Opioids are not though, the US is still the best place to get those.

The US has a major, Vietnam style war on drugs right now. I think opium is only legal in the Middle East and the gulf kingdoms.

The middle east or gulf??? Ehhm no.
You actually get the death penalty there for doing drugs lol.

75% of perscription opioids in the world are taken in the US. ;)

Anyway, don't do drugs kids, buy blades instead! (Even if the prices increase every year)

We weren’t talking about drugs, those are agricultural products! Our pal Nixon really shifted the war on drugs into gear in order to keep hippies and blacks from voting.

If we had the same tariffs in place on Chinese made products as they do on American made products, it wouldn’t be as much of a problem.
That be true as I understand it. I'm not an expert on such things but I believe there is an import tariff (tax) on all imported items into China from the US. You did notice that the president placed a 50% tariff on washing machines and solar panels from there recently. Seldom works in favor for the regular guy (consumer) however.

Not enough content to keep this in General Forum, which is supposed to be about knives.

Closed.
