UGLY! Money Orders and USPS

I have had two bad experiances lately with USPS. Sent a money order to Confederate Cutlery and it took nearly a month to get there using USPS. Sent a knife USPS Priority with tracking that took 13 days to get to its destination two states away. I will never USPS again without paying the additional dollar per hundred for insurance.

Brian,
Sounds like a VERY cool toy! Hard to be patient when trying to pay for those!

Chief,
Your experiences seem similar to mine! That sucks! I haven't used their insurance before but feel it would be prudent to do so in the future.

BTW, Everyone, got my confirmation from PayPal today and I am good to go. They mailed on the 28th and it arrived 31st. I registered way before the 28th so they must have been sorting through all the other people signing as their mail seems to be on track.

Thanks,
Shawn

i never ever had any problems with usps until this christmas, not less than 3 packages get lost on their way to the us, all were shipped priority, i ship important stuff with usps express mail, never ever had problems with it, get 2 packages before christmas and one after with no problem, ok one of them took a week, a bit slow, but it arrived. express mail seems the best to send really expensive or impotant stuff, and ups... well i will never send anything with it...

Blademan,
Yeah, I guess that is the way to go..... Spend more money to get the service I want. I wonder what it was about this past holiday season that was so tough on the mail and deliveries? Maybe they were busy looking for Y2K 'bugs' in the packages?!

Just a quick input from a new guy to the forum. When it comes to USPS I have sent over 200 items in the last year via priority or express mail. I have never had one lost or stolen or damaged. Two important points to keep in mind (and I am sure most of you already know them) 1.Even though it may be nice to see your business name on packages, Never, EVER, put the words, knife, cutlery, blade or any other knife term on your address, this guarentees it will get "Lost".
2. Always Insure, it is cheap piece of mind and most of the time the buyer is very willing to pay the additional small fee. 3. Always when shipping money orders wrap mo in a sheet of paper even if it is a blank one. By the way the small red, white, and blue priority envelopes are the first things postal thieves steal as they know most of the time they contain money orders. Thanks for letting me ramble. Hope these suggestions help.

Well the US Postal Money order finally arrived at it's destination today, 23 days after mailing. Just think from Indiana to Oregon in only 23 days, the Pony Express does still live. I decided to use PayPal last evening and of course Murphy's Law kicked in and the PayPal money arrived before the money order.

I still am a firm believer in shipping or mailing 2 Day Priority Mail. Use insurance and verify delivery.

Stab1,
That is a SOLID summary for this topic! Thanks for the reply..... Excellent info and I can tell where I may have made some mistakes before. The insurance and verify shipment is a must and I will try concealing the MO like you said. My priority before was to get them out 'as quickly as possible' and I think that was a window of opportunity for someone to snag. Live and learn, right?

Sarge,
Your situation is exactly the opposite of what just happened to me with PayPal. I was waiting for the confirmation address thing to come in the mail and finally said to heck with it and just mailed it in the am..... Got home after work and the confirmation was right there! That Murphy guy was quite right!

Thanks for the replies guys!

Emanym Ton, Further Food for thought. About 6 months ago I had occassion to send out about 12 money orders at the same time.(I had been on a buying spree). As a test I sent 6 via first class mail(33 cents) and 6 via priority mail($3.20). In 80% of the cases the first class mail arrived at the same time the priority mail did. Worse case was 1 day later. Plus by hand addressing the envelopes it looks like a "How you doin, we are fine" letter and no one bothers it.

I also use the Post Office Certified Mail and plain envelopes. It's reassuring to get that little green piece of paper in the mail to that you know when it gets there and who signed for it. The plain envelopes don't raise any eyebrows either.

I'd use plain brown envelopes but then people looking for porn would steal that too.

Gotta be careful.

Ron L, Just curious as to how you know porn comes in a plain brown envelope?

Stab1,
Excellent! I love Consumer Reports like that. Multiply all that out and it could translate into another purchase! Gotta have priorities, right?! Great advice!

Ron L,
Thanks for the post! I think I'm getting the picture now. All those colors may attract more than 'attention' from said postal worker.

ROFLMAO about the 'porn' quips! Classic!

Don, ahem, I don't have any personal experience getting that "stuff" in the mail. Word gets around, people talk, you hear things. (BTW, if my wife ever found anything suspect in the mail, I'd be a bad memory at this point. Self-preservation is a hobby of mine.)
