Ulster Old Timer Prince Albert set from factory

As mentioned in another topic, I was the highest bidder in the recent eBay auction for a 3-knife set of Ulster Old Timers. The set was from the knife displays in the closed Schrade factory and included a Prince Albert tobaco can with a $2 OldTimer knife offer and supposedly the three different knives available through the offer.

But one of the three knives in the auctioned set was not the proper knife. The Ulster OldTimer models that were part of the $2 offer were the 50OT Camper, 10OT Barlow, and 58OT Whittler. The set auctioned included the 50OT and 10OT, but contained an Ulster model 55 instead of the 58OT.

I intend this post as a reference for Ulster Old Timers and have scanned the knives and tang markings for future readers.

Here is the auctioned set:

Removing the impostor and replacing it with the proper 58OT:

Here is a closeup of the impostor's tang stamp. This knife is an Ulster 55, the same pattern as the 58OT but not the OldTimer version. The 55 has jigged plastic handles, where the 58OT has sawcut plastic.

Hey I did ok for a guy who just glanced at the ad. Then again I was first hand familiar with most of the pieces. Enjoy the set. Oh yea and save them coupons if you find one written in chinese the new owners might honor it. Did smokey send a certificate of authenticity. By the way great pics Thankyou for posting them LT.

It is nice to see someone who appreciates the set, and is willing to go to the time and expense to not only reassemble it, but to show us such good views of the pieces. Glad to see it in such good hands again.

And I am glad for all the bits and pieces of the Schrade Collection that have been bought and preserved by the members here, as well as the pieces acquired and shown by you all which by all rights belonged in the Schrade collection. Many, many interesting and unique pieces that few of us would have ever had the chance to see without your generosity in showing your collections and explaing details to us here. I sometimes wonder if we, collectively, don't have a much more expansive and comprehensive collection than "THE" collection was.

Many times you'll not see me post on an "old school", clasp knife, toothpick, or other thread. It is not for lack of interest, it is just the old student back in school, sitting quietly, attentive, learning. Scarcely a day goes by that I don't learn something content related here. And the friendly banter makes it all the more fun. I only hope my own contributions add half as much as I learn here.

LOL! Wouldn't want them anyway...

Did smokey send a certificate of authenticity.
Yes, they did. "This is the certify that the following documented item is an original part of the Scrade Factory Collection" with Phil Martin's and Kivin Pipes' signatures at the bottom. I have no reason to doubt that the Ulster 55 was found in the Schrade Factory Collection, but I do wonder whatever happened to the 58OT that you originally donated to Schrade? I imagine things got pretty disorganized in those nine tractor-trailer trucks...

By the way great pics Thankyou for posting them LT
No problem, I merely placed them on a flatbed scanner.

You know, I was thinking if I broke up the set and sold the items seperately on eBay... :D

Just kidding. Rest assured these knives are now a cornerstone of my OldTimer collection.

Thanks Bob for sharing the pictures and your info about this set. That gives me something to look for....the 10OT & the 50OT to complete my set.

Your pictures are really nice. I actually found a use for all the certificates of authenticity I have accumulated. I taped them into a roll and keep them in the "Throne Room" in case I run out of Charmin. :D

I am with Codger. I often "lurk and learn" rather than posting. And I think Codger is right....between all of us we have probably the largest collection of Schrades, albeit an "e-collection," especially when you include LT's collection. Wouldn't it be great if we could all meet at one place for a a few days to display our collections, swap stories, and knives and do the Schrade "Grovel," "Hunker," or whatever?

Glad you were able to make this into a 'real' Prince Albert set, Bob. I wondered about that Ulster 55. In my little old opinion, this auction showed a lack of character on the part of SMKW-- or at least a lack of knowledge. You recognized the oddball knife, but I wonder how many of the other bidders did. But you were able to make the set complete, and thus preserve it as it should be. Good for you!

Certificates of authenticity? I generally have no use for them. I simply toss them away. We can see by this Prince Albert set that they have little meaning.

Nice scans! Bernard Levine really preaches the use of a scanner over a camera for knives. Hard to get a lot of people to stay still on the scanner if you are doing a family portrit of course.

I will try a scanner/camera test tonight after im done playing taxi for the kiddo's
I have a couple of fixed blades that just wont fit in my scanner.
Post the results tomorrow.
Anyone have a knife pattern I should try it with?

Nice knives Bob.

Larry,

...I have a couple of fixed blades that just wont fit in my scanner...
He he, bragging about size... "Dime de que presumes y te diré de que careces", old Mexican saying ("Tell me what you brag about and I will tell you what you are lacking in")

I believe that with appropriate software you can scan different parts of a large piece and put them together.

Even a simple inexpensive scanner does a fine job though you may have to play a bit with settings, I learned from reading posts by Bernard Levine and forum member UnkownVT.

Unfortunately my old scanner is failing some, irregular illumination, not handling changes in resolution well, sometimes goes crazy and I have to reinstall the drivers. I bought it years ago for an old Windows 95 machine and it was great for a long while, I guess it's time to get a new one.

I keep trying to use my scanner to take pictures...but, all I ever get are police calls or the weather.:(

Larry...any pattern is ok...as long as it folds. :D

Bill

For me the big advantage of the flatbed scanner (not a police radio scanner) is time; I don't have a digital camera. The scanner is a relatively inexpensive Epson 1240U. The background material I used is a piece of canvas drop-cloth.

Using the scanner I can't do any artistic backlighting or elaborate multi-knife arrays or scan an entire Khukri, but it is great at zooming and enlarging maker's marks and tang stamps.

Bob.....Thanks for sharing those.

Here is the Ulster question of the day.... When did Ulster make a whittler pattern with the Old Timer shield on the scales and a tang stamping of;
Ulster/USA/9458 ????

I was poking around a store today and found this knife:

Here is a close-up of the tang:

Can someone please help me place it??? It is not one of the numbers listed in the Prince Albert promotion. Is it just a variation on the stamping of the 58OT?
It is the same as my 58OT except for the tang stamp and the fact that the blades have been sharpened much more.

Thanks,
Dale

Just guessing, but I'd say it's likely a factory error. Or perhaps switched during a knife repair?

I'd like to hear anyone else's ideas.

-Bob

Dont know enough about Ulster yet but Bob's idea flies straight. We have seen the same thing with Schrades.
This will be interesting!

Bob; Great pics!! Thanks for sharing the adventure...

Gotta figure out what I'm doing wrong with my scanner... Surely reading the instructions is not an option....

Codger;
Don't know so much about your "friendly banter", but I've picked up a gem or two from your "knifology"... :D

Thanks to all for sharing the wealth !!

Hi, I have the Camper Ulster OT with no numbers. Just> Ulster/USA. Is that the knife that came in the Prince Albert promotion?
Thanks

Yes Scotty. I am sure that is the same knife. That might be a Craftsman number. I have one just like it with no number at all, just Ulster USA. Good chance being in the Schrade family it is a mystery knife.

Hey guys,

I am in the process of putting one of the Prince Albert sets together for myself, but I also found an interesting potential side project. In 1975, Prince Albert did another promotion with the Old Timers. I purchased a can for way too cheap because it also came with the coupons (I've including pictures). No specific details can be found, however, to give specifics on the knife. I already have a 58OT, acquired from my late grandfather, for the 3-knife P.A. project, and I wasn't sure if this was the same "whittler" to which this 1975 campaign also refers. The coupons have an expiration date of December 31, 1975. If anyone has any information, please let me know! I'm also in the process of researching these Dr. Grabow pipes.

Thanks & God bless,
Tim
