Only a dozen,I was hoping for at least 12…Ok, I adjusted this slightly. I am culling out the 2 worst knives (Bulldog trapper and an old Primble scouting knife), since one of them has deteriorating celluloid covers which I don't want to ruin the other knives in the boxes, and the other one has bent up liners and blade wear issues (just old and worn out). I was going back and forth on this, but I don't want to send the winners anything junky or have something ruin the prizes on a potential overseas trip while shipping. So each box will only have a measly dozen knives each in good shape lol.
Good call.Ok, I adjusted this slightly. I decided to try recovering the Bulldog. I gently pried off the covers (easier than I expected actually) and I will attempt to make some wood scales I think. Never tried anything like that before but I think I can do it. Whatever I end up with is better than bad celluloid rusting things anyway, and I have some nice rosewood left over from when my wife and I tried to make handles for our steak knives (hopefully this goes better! lol).Good call.
I had thought about taking out the Primble and the Bulldog, but didn't know what to do with them once I did and figured somebody else might come up with something.
I really liked the size of the Bulldog which I contemplated single blading and recovering, but etched SS blades don't make an ideal user and the Primble I didn't want to just toss out or something.
Are you going to entirely disassemble the knife or just epoxy the new covers on without disassembling the knife ?I decided to try recovering the Bulldog. It would probably be a good idea, especially if the remnants of handle pin have something for the epoxy to really bite onto.Well I thought I would have to totally pull it apart and redo it and everything, but after pulling off the covers I think it would work to do what you’re saying and just epoxy everything together. Currently I’m thinking about making new covers and drilling into them slightly to use the old pins (ground down a little) as support. Like how rebar supports concrete. Does anyone know if that’s necessary or just a waste of time? I also got the old shield out of the celluloid and I will attempt to inlet the wood I’ll use for it. I’ve never done anything like this but I’m fairly handy. We’ll see how it goes I guess. lol
This sounds kind of like how SAK scale are attached. It might be worth it to look into how those are re-scaled.Well I thought I would have to totally pull it apart and redo it and everything, but after pulling off the covers I think it would work to do what you’re saying and just epoxy everything together.
