Ultimate quench oil for 5160

I use McMaster Carr 11 second oil at 1525.

I've also quenched a few test pieces in brine just to experiment. They come out extremely hard!

100% success with either; no warping or cracks.

FWIW, another way to judge hardening temps for 5160, 52100 is to watch for de/recalescence. Just non-mag and a little more heat is a bit vague for me. I HT in a forge with no thermocouple, but will improve my heat control as possible.

Let's try it this way and see what we get.

1500 + 1600 = 3100, dividedby two = 1550

O.K., so it's 1525 to 1550, add those together and you get 3075. Divide that by 2 and you come up with 1537.5

It's 1537.5 degrees exactly. :)

Thanks to everyone that contributed but I think it is time to close this one.

I find it appalling that just can't have a decent discussion about subjects like this.
