Ultrex SureTouch feedback.

They had a table at Blade West. Seems like it's their way of making G10 less slippery. It's very grippy, you can feel the layers if you like that kind of texture. I'm not really into the layered colored aesthetic, but for an outdoor use knife that you know will get wet, it seems like a decent option.

Same, checked it out at Bladeshow West,I saw Jantz is getting some and trugrit will be getting some, I liked the black on black had a real Batman thing going on there, will have to see what I think about it on a handle.

Sound like a good material for fillet or other game processing blades. I'll get some for when the pre Thanksgiving sharpageddon is over. Have a few blades needing new scales.

No, there really isn't any explanation. I suspect that the rubber is a double layer on the one to make more rubber exposed. I'll chime back in after the stuff comes this week.

Stacy - please give us your thoughts about S45VN after making some knives. Ease of grinding and how long it holds an edge. Thanks.

Sent the maker an E-mail so I'll report what the respond with.

I received an E-mail from Jantz regarding the new Ultrex Suretouch G10/rubber layered material for knife handles. What are the advantages/differences between single vs double layer. What traits do they have that would make either better for an application?

This stuff sounds interesting, unfortunately it also sounds like a condom brand. What kind of rubber are we talking about here?

Just going off the name I would guess condom as well never a knife handle.

When I hear back I'll ask the rubber type used if they will disclose it. I just hope not santoprene. Seen many soft handled commercial knives get gooey over time. Really gross when it breaks down.

OK, the 3/16" sheets of this stuff arrived.
The single thickness has 10 G-10 layers and nine rubber layers. They are all the same thickness.
The double layer sheets are seven layers of G-10 and six of rubber. They are not quite the same thickness, with the rubber a tad thinner than the G-10.

Micarta? Thought this was G10. Are they making a micarta rendition also?

Still have not heard back form the manufacturer on traits of either.

No, they said at Bladeshow West just G10 right now.

I was playing with the sheets and if I grip it along the edge or run my finger down the edge it does feel much grippier that plain G-10 laminate. I think this has great potential for larger folders as well as EDC knives. Of course, it will really improve the grip on skinners and fillet blades. I'll have to make some test blades to decide if it is OK for kitchen knives. I think I'll start with fillet knives, hunters, and maybe a folder handle. I just ordered a few more sheets in 3/8" for kitchen handles.

The layering is all up to the individual and look you or others may want. The rubber is .015” thick and each layer of the G10 is about .0085” thick. So, to get a balanced look you want to go with 2. The idea comes from listening to customers and asking for a grippier grip. The amount of G10 or rubber can be altered a bit meaning if someone wanted more G10, less rubber it could be done. Do we have thicker rubber? Not at this time. The minimums are large and lead-times are long. Other colors of rubber? Yes there are some however; again lead-times are long and large minimums.

We are the manufacturer and depend on people like Jantz and others to help us determine what the customer wants. This is a totally new product and will be tested over time by people like you."
