What is a good Ulu to get for survival? Any suggestions? I am also looking for some good sites or pics that show some uses of this tool. Does anyone here use one? Thanks in advance for the help.

Morablades,

I use Ulus in the kitchen often, I also carry the TOPS ATAX which is very similar to an Ulu. I believe some of the Northern Natives of America have used them for quite a while. If you want an outdoor version, you might want to look at the ones that have produced by Knives of Alaska (they were sold through Cabela's at one point). I will see if I can find a link for you...

Alaska Pro Ulu or some combination of those words should get you to a link on ulus. I had a Power Ulu I think it was called one time; but before I could even get around to opening the package a friend admired it enough for me to let her take it without ever handling it myself. I have a few knives to play with and it caught her eye....we all know how that feels when it comes to knives!

I picked up one when I was in Alaska 2 summers ago and I really like it. Its a big one not suitable for packing. I have been looking at the Bark River and the Knives of Alaska ones lately. I have held the KoA version and it fits in the hand nicely but it is small. The new BRKT ulu looks pretty sweet because it is modeled after a different design which included a longer side that adds versitility. I would add that most of the ones on ebay are very cheap quality. I held some of these exact models and was not impressed at all.

There's quite a few pretty decent ones available up here.

My mother has one from Eagle River knife company that she's fallen in love with. It seems okay enough to my eye, but I think it's alot of money for laminate wood and 440 C. Take a look for yourself and see what you think:

My personal favorite for all around use is the Ulu made by Brusletto. insanely sharp Sandvik 12C27 that's pretty large, versatile, and has the Inupiat style handle that I tend to favor over the Apron style.

Northern Knives has a whole slug of Ulu's made by Dancing Man knives (Tactical Knives did a real nice write up on him several months ago)

and the Super, Deluxe, Uber Ulu type skinner (One I've covetted for quite awhile) made by a local Maker by the name of Dennis Jokela.

They have a page up here: http://northernknives.net/index.html

Or you could call them at (907) 569-1800. I've known them for quite a few years, and know they'll hook you right up.

Ulu's are some of the most underestimated knives out there. My mother took her $10 grocery store, tourist trap Ulu and made my father and my brother look downright silly with thier traditional fillet knives. (my Father was using a Microtech Black Marlin)

best of luck in your selection!

I love ulu's!!!
There is a knife company that sells "blanks"
I was thinking of getting it and putting on a nice hickory "handle"
They only experience I have is with some cheapo "tourist" version my buddy has
Has a picture of some giant caribou (or elk?)
For a cheap tourist knife it sure is sharp!!!
It's great for cutting french bread
One handed action....

Thanks guys. I am having trouble deciding which one to get. All of them look good. I am thinking of a modification that I may have to do though. Extending the handle making it a little longer on one side.

Im thinking I might make my own. Similiar to the one on the bottom.

Here's a neat design from AG Russel called the roman hunters axe.

5.5" cutting edge and 13.5" overall weighing in at 15ozs msrp of $70. Kinda like a long handles ulu.

I have a couple of traditional antler handled ones, you can have one for the shipping.
I'll try to get a pic for ya.
