Um...num...apart...

I'm wondering if the pivot screw functions as a bushing by having the two halves stand off a certain width.

I think blademan nailed it. The reason for the thicker pivot is to negate the pivot bushing. I believe the key to smoothness is the final polishing, not only on the pivot, but inside the blade as well.

Then there were two.........screws that is!

Blackend,

Indubiously, but what I mean is that whereas the pivot bushing in the Sebenza prevents one from tightening the pivot screw too tight, and thereby binding the blade, I believe the pivot screw does this on the Umnumzaan. I don't know, but I can only hypothesize that when the two halves are screwed together, the end of the female half butts up against the inside of the head of the other half. Thus, the stand off is the proper distance so that the blade is not pinched too tightly between the scales, thereby achieving the same effect as the pivot bushing in the Sebenza.

Possible. I'll let you know tomorrow as mine will be here. Notice how there is a ridge in the bushing of the Umnumzaan and a place in the handle slab for it to sit. Not a feature on the Sebenza. Maybe this disallows for overtightening? Just a different principle then the Sebenza.

I love this knife, done with typical chris reeve class.:thumbup::thumbup:

Well.......Umnumzaan in hand, and all I can say is WOW! Very cool! The knife fits my medium size hand like a glove. Ergonomically the handle shape far exceeds the Sebenza(sorry, you guys know I'm a Sebbie freak). The bottom of handle is perfect for your four fingers. My index finger sits between the front groove of the handle and the lock release. Middle finger just between the back(or bottom)of the lock and the first curve(wedge). The last two fingers snuggly behind the wedge and the back of the frame with about a 3/32" frame left. Sounds like I'm describing holding any knife, but my point is that your(my) hand automatically finds the sweet spot on this one. The large Classic kind of does this but not nearly as nice!

Next...The length is pretty much the exact same size as the large Classic. The difference being the blades. This part is pretty cool. The Umnumzaan blade length overall is actually shorter than the Classic, but the cutting edge(numzaan) is longer. Huh, you say? Without the need for a inner stop pin, less blade goes into the handle. I'm going to try and get some picture up soon. I don't have a digital camera at the moment, but I'll figure something out.

Hard to tell but I'd say the titanium handles are the same thickness as the large Sebs. Maybe a tad, and I mean tad thicker. The blade is about 1/32" thicker though. Nice. I really like the swedge and it is almost sharp. I cut into a thick piece of paper, and it tore more than cut, but you could put a scary sharp edge on it if you desired. The lanyard ring is neat, as there is hole in it where your lanyard goes through.

The lock. Interesting......There are three(3) detent balls. One holds the knife closed and also prevents the lock from overtravel. One is on top of the lock(new and kind of scary to me). Guessing the ceramic between the titanium and blade helps with lock up. It definatly prevents sticking which I've heard many here complain about. Very soild lock up though. The third ball is a huge one right behind the upper lock to prevent backwards over travel upon closing. A very nice touch.

My last observation is a dissapointing one. NO DAD GUM TOOL!!
Man was I looking forward to taking this sucker apart. Don't know if it got forgotten or purposely left out. I'm guessing the latter till the factory figures out how to "splane" to us little people how to properly disessmble it.

I know I've left out bunchs of stuff here, so feel free to ask, and I will try to answer the best I can. As you can see I hate typing:rolleyes:

I just can't wait to actually hold one of these. I wasn't crazy about the looks the first time I saw it, but it has really grown on me.

I am getting the fever!

Talked with Heather today, and I guess the only tool is one(s) in the photo. Apparently there were in rush to get these made for the Blade show and haven't made any tools yet. I should be getting the first one(s) ASAP. Wondering what other's who have the Numzan are thinking?
:)

How about some pics that show the details like the ceramic balls, lanyard attatchment point, and thumb stud/blade stop?

Wish I could, I'll try. I took the photos with my scanner and it was hard enough get the pix that I did.

On another note, talking with Heather today, I found that the blade thickness on the Sebenza is .121 and the Numzaan is .150. The titanium handle slabs are the same size!

Great pics Blackend! I can't imagine that the tightness of the pivot will bind the motion of the blade. IMO that would be a step backwards for CRK and I just can't see that happenning. Chris takes his knives too seriously to leave out something like that. That sharpenend swedge is something else, isn't it?:thumbup::cool::D

Also you can go with/without the lanyard without untying it. Very:cool:!

Talking with the shop foreman the other day... he said the pivot tightens the same as on the Sebenza. So don't fret, all should be up to Chris Reeve par on this one.
:)

I just got my prototype today, and it goes above and beyond what i was expecting. If anyone thinks the sebenza is good wait until you get one of these in your hand. Ive had alot of knives thru the years and this one is definately in the top , um never mind ; it owns the number one spot. :D
