Umnumzaan disassembling

Great pics man  I need a good camera, maybe I should stop spending all my $ on knives and sharpening equipment

Some photos about sharpening my Umnumzaan.
I used DMT Diamond stones 8" and Spyderco Triangle Sharpmaker as guides.

Edge before sharpening:

At first, DMT Extra Coarse at angle of 30 degrees:

The burr appears.

20 minutes later, after Extra Coarse:

Next stone is DMT Fine (red) at 30 degrees.

Next, I do small 40-degrees edge. About 15 moves from each side. Now the knife able to cut. Not perfect, but quite easy.

Next, DMT Extra fine 6" at both 30 and 40 degrees. Now, the knife is sharp.

But we have burr yet, so next step is Spyderco Triangle Sharpmaker's ceramic stones (only flat surfaces).

- at first, grey Medium
- then white Fine
- finally, white UltraFine with red ends...

Now the Umnumzaan is very sharp. Easy shaving etc.

Finally, Assam tea, bread and Casademont dry-cured sausage. Good wishes :)

Great pics throughout this whole thread. I like how you used the dmt on the spyderco sharpener for the angle. I will probably attempt the same thing soon on mine.

Super sharp pics! :)

I have one question tho, does the Umnumzaan come with a sharpened swedge or is it a false edge?

Swedge is not real sharp edge, it do not cut paper, wood etc.
But you can cut steak or burger, for example.

I was just bit worried that you might cut yourself if the swedge was sharp since it stays unprotected when knife is closed.

By the way, the more I look at your pictures of the Umnumzaan, the more I want one for myself :)

Amazing how you captured the essences of your relationship with your Zaan and now your Sebbie. Thank You for sharing with these awesome pictures.

Awesome shots! Thanks for sharing. If they're not in the sticky gallery... they should be!

Great thead, glad u revived it!
Question... When you put it back together, I'm assuming u used blue loctite. How did you spead the loc-tite, and did you tighten and then back off the screw a bit? Please explain your procedure.
Thx

I'm pretty sure it's the red loctite which is the lowest strength. Use the blue and it will be difficult if not impossible to back it off the next time. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, I really just wanted to subscribe to this thread :) Amazing pics

Good natured correction: DO NOT USE RED LOCTITE.
You want to use purple (recommended by CRK, the weakest Loctite product). It may be possible to use blue (easier to find and still reasonably weak; not sure how the Delrin tool prongs will fare if you don't do something like heat the pivot first). Red is stronger and risks breaking tools or rounding out fasteners.
