Umnumzaan gives SNG a run for it's money.......

Wow, you have some great taste bigmark , makes me want to run out and buy a Strider after seeing those two :o

I think they both have their roll in the toolbox. I do carry both regularly (Large regular seb and an SMF). I will admit that I use the SMF for things that I wouldn't use the sebbie for.

From what I'm reading, Strider will cover all sorts of use that would be defined as abuse by the CRK warranty. Strider also does make sure to exclude "pimping", but that only stands to reason as most would agree, I think.

I guess I must still be missing something:o:D
from Strider
If you HAVE Pimped, Tweaked or Fumbled with your knife…
Your knife will be returned to its original condition, and you will be charged for parts and labor. If we are able to salvage your “parts” we will return them with your reconditioned knife.

This is basically what Reeve does. You screw it up, we'll fix it but there will be a charge.
From CRK
One of the great things about our knives is that they can be refurbished readily. Whether fixed blade or folder, we can service your knife so that it looks great again and performs the way it was intended. For an outline of costs, please see the price list and, if you have any questions in this regard, please contact us!

But I think "pimping", or modding the knife is different than prying or flipping the blade open. I mean ,if someone is dumb enough to try to break concrete blocks with a folder(or any knife, in my mind) and they end up breaking the knife, Strider will still fix the knife( from what I've read, they will call you a dumbass at the least). CRK, from what I've read, would say something like, "That's not what a knife is intended for, it's abuse, so the warranty is void".
That's how I understand the difference based on past reading of Strider's warranty. That's the intent, from what I understand. Strider has a much broader interpretation of the warranty, while CRK maintains a narrower scope. Strider has always had its focus on front-line workers(military LEO, fire),assuming they would be most likely to use the knife in many un-knife ways while performing their duties while CRK had only a few of its knives focus on that market.

He goes into a bit more detail

Regarding repairs:

We are forced through both Liability and Monetary reasons to make some changes to our repair policy.

Liability: We are responsible for the condition of EVERY knife that LEAVES our shop, regardless of what has been done by YOU. When the knife leaves here, and we have worked on it, we are responsible for it again. Unfortunately, we can’t afford the liability of YOUR work.

Monetarily: We currently spend an average of 20 man hours a week on repairs that are not caused by “use”. These repairs are due to “Pimping, Tweaking and Fumbling.” We get knives that you wouldn’t believe….with notes that are so incredible that I wish I could start a thread and post them for you…..
“I’m not sure what's wrong….the knife is brand new I never even took it out of the package”…. That’s odd… because we always put the screws in the correct side of the knife… and we don’t cover everything in red loctite…

This has nothing to do with Pimpers, Tweakers or Fumblers… We’re fine with all that. Unfortunately, much like your auto warrantee wouldn’t cover a home made fuel injection system on your new Corvette, we can’t assume liability for your home made knife changes.

Therefore:

Any knife sent in for sharpen/repair; will be returned to Strider Knives Company Standards.

What does this mean on your end?

If your knife has not been Pimped, Tweaked, or Fumbled with...
Not a damn thing. Your knife will be returned to its original condition and sent home for the cost of shipping.

If your knife HAS been Pimped, Tweaked or Fumbled with...
Your knife will be returned to its original condition, and you will be charged for parts and labor. If we are able to salvage your “parts” we will return them with your reconditioned knife.

Strider Knives Inc. Statement of Warrantee:

If it's broken, we'll fix it.
If it's dull, we'll sharpen it.
If it's old and tired, we'll refurbish it.
Some things have a fee, some don't.
Ask around ... we won't do you wrong.

I have never handled a Strider ( I might be tempted to buy one;)) but they seem very rugged. I do own 3 Sebbies and I don't plan to find out just what exactly the warranty covers:D. Maybe the CRK folks would care to comment.
Kind regards

Shike

I'm thrilled about the Umnum. As a lefty I don't have the wide variety that you normal handed people do. I had a chance to buy a left hand Stider but I passed. I just couldn't see spending that much money on something so crude.:p
