I don't think there are enough threads here on the Umnum as there should be.

As being a newbie to Chris Reeve knives, I don't know if it's considered to be inferior to the Sebenza or if it's just a newer knife that doesn't have a whole lot of talk about it.

So, LET"S GET TO IT! :barf:

Well since you say so...

You're the one that wants to talk about it. Why don't you share your thoughts on the Umnum first, and then we can start a conversation on it.

sad to say, but I don't have any CRKs yet. I might be getting an Umnum as a trade soon and I was just looking around for opinions and reviews. It looks like a really solid knife, and I personally like the different shape on the spine.

But I won't know until I actually get my hands on it....

it is a solid knife but not for me. Why? IThe Sebenza is MUCH easier to open and close, easier to take down for cleaning and easy to assemble. I also like the Sebenza as I feel it's a better slicer.

I like it alot.
It is the only knife which has a glass-breaker which doesn't cause my eyes to puke.
It locks up solid (as long as the lock-bar tension is set right).
It is easy to disassemble for cleaning (especially if you don't use loc-tite on the pivot screw...I HATE loc-tite).
It slices with the best of them.
It is stabby as all hell with the partially sharp swedge (which can also be used on a fire-steel).
The O-ring shock absorber things make for totally silent opening if you open it slowly.
It is the only knife I own where even non-knife people get why I spent alot of coin on it.
It is slim in the pocket, width-wise.
The steel touches up easily. No problems sharpening it.
I only wish the pocket clip "lip" didn't rise as steeply; it can dig into the hand a little in certain grips. That's my only complaint, and it's a minor one.

Welcome.

Have you tried s-e-a-r-c-h??? :D

Not better, but newer and different.

Had one, sold it, still have Sebs (regular, classic and 21). I didn't like the ergos on the Umnuzaan at all, but YMMV.

That is the only thing I can foresee bothering me wishing I would have gotten the Sebenza. But who am I kidding, we all know I'll end up getting both after all.

I prefer the zaan over a regular sebenza. I haven't had an inlay yet. The blade is very sharp and slices as well as any knife I've had. It's simple to take apart with the kit and after being cleaned, mine pops open with a very slight push of the thumb.

yes i did search and there was only 1 thread on the last page. is there a new rule saying that there can only be 1 thread per knife type? every other thread for 4 or 5 pages are dedicated just for sebenzas. that's why i wrote "I don't think there are enough threads here on the Umnum as there should be."

but all sarcasm aside, i hope i didnt offend anyone by creating a "non-sebenza" thread. im just excited that i might finally be able to get my first chris reeves knife and hoping that it lives up to all the hype that people say about them.

THIS is the type of posting I'm looking for. Thank you for your post about cleaning it. I figured with the tool, it wouldn't be hard at all to take apart and clean.

If I were going to purchase a new CRK, and knowing what I know now, I'd go for a tanto Umnumzaan. I'm really not a fan of tantos but there's something about the blade shape of the Umnum that I really like. Compared to my Sebenza, my Umnum opens smoother and quieter. There really isn't a difference in the dis-assembly of either knife as both utilize very simple designs. In the end, you can't go wrong with either...but as my first CRK folder I'd spring for an Umnum.

I had one, don't feel lost without one. You need a special tool to open it, the blade is only marginally thicker, and the tip is weaker then the sebenzas. Now you do have a nice fat pivot on the zaan... but I have never worried about my large sebenza pivot breaking.. I like the ergos on both the regular and 21 sebenzas better then the zaans also. For a full on tough, beat it through concrete block knife and pry a door open knife... you are better off with something like a hinderer or Strider. For everytyhing else there is the Sebenza... lol.

EDIT: lol, reading this over it looks like I hate the zaan... I don't.. the fit and finish is incredible and it looks awesome, and if it feels good in your hands then that is great.. but after handling all the knives I made my conclusion which is explained above..

The "special tool" I use is two toothpicks cut in half.
Two pieces in two holes on each side.
Works awesome, it's cheap, and they'll also clean your teeth!

Hahahah...:D, when I got my zaan it came with the tool, so I had no problem with it... but its not just an every day allen wrench you can find in your tool box, thought it was worth a mention...

I got mine before they shipped with the takedown tool.
I was annoyed about having to order one, then I was looking at the pivot holes one night, and noticed a couple of round toothpicks on the coffeetable.
It looked like they were the same diameter, and the brain lightbulb blinked on.:D

or a stout fixed blade like a Bravo 1.

I'm really excited about handling my first CRK, I guess I'm just excited about finally getting one after hearing so many good things about the sebenza. they just seem that they are more popular that the Umnumzaan.

originally, i wanted a XM-18, but stumbled upon the Umnum as a trade. I still want a hinderer tho

Yup, had one of those too, sold it. It was a fine knife, but I like my Busse Boss Street much better... toughest 4 inch knife I have ever run across...... love the ergos and the wicked edge it takes.

i don't use my bravo very much, but i'll never sell it since it was my first barkie and my dad gave it to me as a gift when we started hanging out more. so it's more of a sentimental thing for me than anything else.

I have a regular one and a tanto one. I really like the knife but they seemed to tear up my pockets more than the Seb. The Umnum isn't better or superior but different. I like the Insigo, I like the slim profile of the plain seb and the precision of its bearing system.

Well, I will be getting a Umnum sent to me in a trade that was completed today. I'll be able to form my own opinion very soon.
