Under the Red Dot/this can't be happening

W  W, Mike,

I hope you get through this OK. Let's see. Has it been 6 weeks since you quit drinking? This will be a good test for you. And think of all the space in your car you're saving not taking booze along :D

I hope you don't have to leave, that it will go around you. You deserve a break this year. Take care!!!!!!!

One other tool: a spotlight that plugs into your 12 volt outlet is very useful when finding your way in real darkness.

Stuff to stay alive for a couple days without civilization. If it's bad, emergency services might be too swamped to notice you and yours. Non-perishable food, such as MREs are good. Water and water purification is key (assuming you'll go far enough inland to avoid salt water contamination).

Khuks (duh.), guns, ammo. All are good for survival, both against nature's wrath and the wrath of human nature. Be careful, and be wary.

Most of all, keep a cool head. Panic kills. The most important piece of equipment is your brain. Also be cautious of people experiencing panic. They probably won't be considerate or rational.

Be careful and keep us posted.

BTW, I read another thread on a different survivalist site by a person who was in New Orleans during Ivan and ignored the evacuation notice. Said he was glad he did, because many motorists were caught in clogged traffic while the storm advanced. If you do evacuate (and if you and yours are in danger, I would if I were you), beware of traffic. Try to either beat or avoid the rush.

Best of luck, and hang in there.

Ad Astra,

Hang in there. You can never tell what these things will do. Just get ready, secure any loose items around the property, and keep an eye on it.

Here is the latest projection:

Good luck

Mike,

This sneaky bastard seems to be working it way around Cuba's mountain range. It is also set to go blasting through the core of the island with winds gusting to 185 MPH!

looks like it could be making a beeline for havana. I bet castro has the only hurricane proof shelter on the island. I've got some family there too.

Hang in there AA, we're thinking of you here. Let me know if you need that MRE back

What city does A.A. live?

He's always had in a fema trailer or by the sea as his listed location.

I'd like to see what it's like in his exact location.

I hope it's not too bad.

Well I had a couple of links but lost one. Looks like the forecasters hit this one right on the nose.

I think I'd have to move after losing most everything a couple of times but the home ties are strong and as Mike has said, "Things have been easy up 'till this year." paraphrased.

I think I heard someone on CNN mention that they were already keep an eye on two new storms that had just emerged from the African coast. So perhaps we will all be back in a week to do this all over again. :grumpy:

I believe it hit almost exactly where it was forecasted to... and that is probably a very bad thing since Ad Astra lives right on the coast. The storm surge from a hurricane is one of the most powerful and frightening things in nature, like a miniature tsunami- only with a lot more wind. :( :grumpy:

Smoke goes up.

Mike, let us know how things are going if you can. Somehow I figure you don't have any power yet, but when you get back online give us a shout. Prayers for you and yours.

Credit cards might not work with no power. Cash is always good to have. One of those phony cans with the false bottom to keep it in. Good luck. We will all be watching the weather man.

Hi and thanks everybody.

Eye of Dennis did pass over- we got eyewall winds & 8 ft surge.

We live in a coastal community east of Pensacola and took a direct hit...

House got extensive damage but is reparable- we only moved back in after Ivan a month ago- my contractor will just keep working!

Storm stories later. Thanks!

Glad to hear you made it through. Sounds like you have some damage, but don't have to move out, which is great.

Looking forward to the stories.
