Underappreciated Busses (especially the Sus Scrofa)

"Did take a big hit on a pair of the original Santa's Outlaw Wicked. That blade profile did not resell very well in any variation."

I would have LOVED to have gotten in on one of those. Surprised they did not hold their value.
For Sale: Koster Survivor No Waiting!!

In the beginning I felt the Basic series and Res C handles did not get the attention they deserved, but it has changed over the years. The original Basics (B3, B5, B7 & B9) were out of production for awhile, and then the original Rats (Swamprat) came along with Res C handles (Camp Tramp, BR & HR). The Rats were chased away by the Dogs (Scrapyard), and Res C became even more popular with the SY "11" series (311, 511, 711, 911, 1111 & 1311). Somewhere in there new Basics came along (B4, B6, B8, B10 & B11), and even more Dogs with Res C. Now we have the Alpha Dogs & Alpha Regulators, and Res C seems much more mainstream, especially compared to the early days - I'm glad to see the change! :)

I am probably in the minority here but for the most part, the reason it took me so long to get a knife with one of these handles was the look. For me the Dog Soldiers (especially the 8) was the one that showed me that a handsome knife actually could wear a res-c handle. Still kicking myself for not getting one when they were available but the AD6 (which to my eye is even better looking) has eased that pain tremendously.

I am with you there, clampdaddy. While I harbor unfounded prejudice against the Res C re performance, I nonetheless cannot warm up to the look - especially compared to a nicely contoured and therefore layered micarta or G10. I like to think that I am "above" judging a tool - even one so personal as a knife - by it's looks, but truth is that apparently I am not!

cd & kh, I understand about the looks of Res C handles, but they sure feel good especially with heavy use like chopping. Also, Res C naturally provides a more secure grip, which I find helpful.

Under the heading of True Confessions :(

I finally did it.

After probably 4 years of secretive and furtive lurking, lusting, dreaming, fantasizing, feverishly hoping for the public reopening of the CS, and generally spending far too much time drooling over a picture with a bright red background, I broke down and contacted one "LK."

I mean, what does it hurt to send an email? And then a txt, or two . . . and then to place a phone call? Surely it is all just harmless play, you know? More fantasy than anything really. :p

BUT then a "deal" is offered privately. A "forum price," as it were (but we weren't on a forum?). A counteroffer is made. Then an offer to meet halfway is tendered. And suddenly, amazingly, the unthinkable price is now actually kinda doable o_O, and to my amazement (shame?) I find myself with a Nuclear Sus Scrofa in the mail :D. (Black with solid orange G10; deep, sweeping thumb rest; long, sharpened back edge; re-contoured scales with more narrow profile; re-contoured, shorter pommel)

Pics to follow upon delivery!

Sometimes ya' just gotta do what ya' just gotta do :)

Rats.
If I'd known anyone wanted a SS, I would have listed one of mine on the exchange at a "forum price."
But not a CS version, so if that's what you really had to have, I guess you did what you had to do.
Revel in your time, I guess. Good luck on getting your soul back, though.

I agree. As long as you are happy with the deal, that is all that really matters. On occasion I have paid more than the going amount for a knife because it was a variation that I really wanted. The intangible "satisfaction" value of owning a particular item is difficult to put a dollar amount on, and the $ amount would probably vary greatly from one person to the next.

Congrats, and I look forward to the pics!

Well, this certainly won't be the first time I have been told I sold my soul, but it may be the best return I have gotten on such a transaction! (but, yeah, I obviously felt "dirty;" hence the lead sentence to the post.)

"No Regrets!" still applies, though, right? I don't remember a caveat originally attached to that motto

As I indicated, the final price wasn't that darn bad, actually. Not your "forum price" for a SS, no doubt, but then this is a CS Nuked blade, and to my eye the sweetest rendition I have seen. As I said, I have lusted after it since 2015, so no, I have no regrets! Thank you, though, for the generous thought and impulse.
Should you have any desire to part with one or more of your S-Scrofa's, it is one of my top 3 Busse designs, so I would always consider another - just sayin' in response to your reply. Would love to see a pic/s of what you have for 'em in the stable - whether for sale or just to admire!
As discussed earlier in this thread, I pretty recently bought a DC/BB, green linen SS to replace my lost Tigerhide and satin LE SS, which tragically was lost to a technical slot canyon's keeper pothole in backcountry Zion NP. The SS is my "go-to" rope and webbing cutter, so it simply had to be replaced. This CS job is optimized for slashing self defense cuts, besides IMHO just being super cool :) I will definitely post pics - hopefully I get her tonight

Thanks for the support, gk4ever2! Collectables, things like knives, are worth "whatever a particular individual is willing to pay on any given day," right? So with that in mind, I got the best deal ever. And, yeah, I am happy with the deal (to my surprise) or I would not have pulled the trigger on it. Frankly, I am glad I inquired and negotiated. I had always figured those prices were set in stone. That said, I do not intend to make a habit of this particular seller. Above, when I said I felt dirty, it was partly in the spirit of the commentary which I received. But in truth I have mixed feelings about doing business - even satisfactory business - with a seller by whom other forumites have reported being mistreated. Somehow it feels like tacit support of that and any such practices - or at least turning a blind eye in one's enlightened self interest. On the other hand, I also believe in second chances (I am sure some would say that particular ship sailed long, long ago). So there's that. Anyway, I HAD to have IT and HE was who had it. (and for the record, the transaction has been entirely satisfactory to this point) NOTE: I do NOT want to turn this thread into yet another LK thread :)!! Just wanted to be fair and had to properly attribute the knife and acknowledge its "controversial" (to some) provenance.

If you're happy with the price as the buyer, more power to ya...not a choice I'd make, but I'm no one's judge, and ultimately, not even my own judge...

anyways, at this point I'd be more concerned it arrives in "as advertised" condition...

I'd take a vid of the unboxing and blade condition fresh outta the parcel...again, that's just what I'd do...take it as a friendly suggestion. :)

Based on the anecdotes of others I share the thought. I am choosing to be optimistic, however. While optimistic, trust has not yet been fully established, so your suggestion is well-taken, and I believe I will do just that. Thank you!

Well I gotta say, it came in the condition advertised = brand spankin' new, unused, and mint. Not a blemish on it, however so slight.
I wish I could figure out how to take and post better photos, but this is the best I could do.
At any rate, I LOVE it! :) "NO REGRETS!"
Man, I wish the Custom Shop would open up to us mere mortals. Would just love to work with the Busse folks on some cool stuff like this.
