Unusual find?

On a little hike today, I came across a backwoods shelter somewhat close to a campground. The inside (last pic) was surprisingly roomy even though the pic doesn't show it very well. I have never come across one of these before and was wondering if it was an unusual or common find.

looks pretty well constructed from where i sit, neat find.

i've never found anything like that, that's pretty cool

Cool! I love making shelters. That looks like a substantial structure for your area.

cool!! I've found the starts of shelters.. but nothing that looks as well done as that... I'm sure however people have found a few of mine...

That's cool. Probably a pretty efficient shelter when the pines were green.

Definitely a non-smoking section now. ;):D

It is also certainly someone who was practicing shelter making rather than a homeless or stranded person. If you were NEEDING the shelter it probably would have used plastic and other material scavenged from the camping area.

well that sure is a good find...i would be temped to spend a night in it...you know to test it....:)

A quick question based on the 1st & 2nd pic.

Which way would the water flow in a heavy downpour?

Kind regards
Mick

IMO that shelter needs another 3' of debris added. Ours looked like tiny hills when I was in the boy scouts. The thickness is what keeps the water out and heat in. And a good bit of insulation on the ground too.

But! Neato find for sure. I've never found one. You should leave a note in there and ask what forum that guy hangs out at.

Classic widow-maker-bonfire-rain-water-catch-deadfall shelter. Is there an ungrounded lightning rod nearby? That is all it needs. :)

I found this one slightly off the trail on top of Blood Mtn here in GA. Not the best pic, but it was some sticks in a grid with a few layers of grass. moss and leaves held up with some rope. Seems like it would have made a decnt rain shelter.

Good question. Actually, the way the shelter is positioned, water would come from behind it in a heavy downpour. I had not considered that when I saw it because it is generally pretty dry around here, but you point out a subtlety that can make all the difference between a dry night or a wet one.

Ha ha, that's funny. Wouldn't it be cool if the guy is someone on this forum?
