Get this, I went in the shop around 11am and found another one in there. It was very small, only about 10 inches and as big around as my pinky. Easily taken care of with a shovel. There is a slot in the foundation of the shop that was made to get water plumbed in, so they must be coming in there. Time to get a sack of concrete and close it up. My neighbor, who has lived around here forever, told me that this is the time when they are looking for a place to hibernate as it has cooled off lately. He got one at his place yesterday too.
To answer some questions, no I didn't eat it. Ain't no way my wife would have it in her kitchen.
My boys are 2 and 4 years old. They are as well trained as a kid can be as far as snakes go. This spring my older son found a baby rattler in a drain and did just what I told him....leave it alone and tell me. I still worry a lot and we search the yard when they go out to play.
I believe the law in CA regarding rattlers is that there is no closed season, and unlimited take, so I am fine killing them as needed.
marekz---About two months ago I went in my yard with my brother-in-law and my dog. My dog walks out on the grass and I hear the buzzzz that makes the hair on your neck stand up. I look up to see my dogs nose about 1 foot away from a pissed rattler that looks ready for business. I scream at my dog who proceeds to ignore me, but I figure I ain't getting close enough to grab his collar. I get as close as I dare and scream at the dog in my loudest and scariest voice I can muster and luckily he backs away. That was the snake that donated the patch of skin in the pic.
Hopefully the rattlers are all ready to take their long winter snooze so I can relax some.
