Unwelcome shop visitor

That is an impressive picture Nathan. You don't see that kind of den around here. I don't have a problem with snakes if they are where they should be. Its when they are where they shouldn't be that something has to be done.

wow am i live in a city....i think i'd faint if i ever saw a snake in my yard....ryan

Nathan , that pic grossed me out the 1st. time I saw it and it did the same thing this time even though I knew what I was going to see .

Hehe...Jack, I thought I'd be kind enough to share with those who don't frequent the ATG subforum. :D

I had read somewhere that high nitrogen fertilizer will keep snakes away. I have been putting it around my house and also the yard perimeter and have not seen a single snake since starting that a few years ago. before that i would see several a year. even had one in the garage all curled up around my dog harnesses i had hanging in the garage next to the door going into the house. That was when i started searching on how to keep them away. So far so good. Apparently the first number of the 3 numbers on the fertilizer bag is the nitrogen. i have been using 25/5/5.

i thought the south had its fair share of rattlers but in the last 3 weeks ive heard mention of the abundance of them in cali. Is there any statistics of people being bitten in cali versus other states? When i walk deep in the woods here in Georgia i usually have my dog , but still i rarely run across a snake ( knock on wood) and if i do its usually a black snake ( which i am very found of and thankful for what they do). I worry more about ticks and jiggers than much else. I have seen maybe 3 rattlers here in the last 13 years. -thankz-marekz---oh ya BLACK WIDOWS and BROWN RECLUSE SPIDERS are something i watch for and usually always where gloves when messing with rocks or wood....check out this rattlesnake found in macon georgia

Quite frankly rattlesnake tastes a lot more like frog legs than chicken.... It also makes for a great chili.

Get this, I went in the shop around 11am and found another one in there. It was very small, only about 10 inches and as big around as my pinky. Easily taken care of with a shovel. There is a slot in the foundation of the shop that was made to get water plumbed in, so they must be coming in there. Time to get a sack of concrete and close it up. My neighbor, who has lived around here forever, told me that this is the time when they are looking for a place to hibernate as it has cooled off lately. He got one at his place yesterday too.

To answer some questions, no I didn't eat it. Ain't no way my wife would have it in her kitchen.
My boys are 2 and 4 years old. They are as well trained as a kid can be as far as snakes go. This spring my older son found a baby rattler in a drain and did just what I told him....leave it alone and tell me. I still worry a lot and we search the yard when they go out to play.
I believe the law in CA regarding rattlers is that there is no closed season, and unlimited take, so I am fine killing them as needed.

marekz---About two months ago I went in my yard with my brother-in-law and my dog. My dog walks out on the grass and I hear the buzzzz that makes the hair on your neck stand up. I look up to see my dogs nose about 1 foot away from a pissed rattler that looks ready for business. I scream at my dog who proceeds to ignore me, but I figure I ain't getting close enough to grab his collar. I get as close as I dare and scream at the dog in my loudest and scariest voice I can muster and luckily he backs away. That was the snake that donated the patch of skin in the pic.

Hopefully the rattlers are all ready to take their long winter snooze so I can relax some.

If you found the big one and a small 10inch rattler then theres a great chance of finding more of those babies since you probably shot the mother. Keep a very very close eye out for more babies. If I was around your area I would gladly come by and hunt for them. I'll take the meat and you can have the skin but I also want to save the tails. We dont get many rattlers around our house due to my neighbors cats controlling the rodent population.

One day I will be coming up to Abilene for the rattlesnake round up. I can taste the meat already lol.

Huh, ran over two rattlers today not far from my house. Never seen rattle snakes around these parts, mostly copperheads and black snakes. Got a pair of black snakes live in holes in the back yard that I leave alone to keep the field mice population down. It's been raining everyday here for the last month or so and everything from ants to snakes are hunting someplace dry. Wouldn't surprise me to find on in my shop before long.

Want to get rid of snakes around your house? Get a cat. I've lived in snake country all my life and it works.

Wow, makes me realise how much of a wimp I am living in England. The scariest thing id find in my garden would be a large garden spider.

Jamie

Jamie, if I saw a large garden spider, I'd probably scream like a girl and run in the opposite direction :D. I hate freaking spiders!
