Here's a little knife I've been working on for a few days now. My good friend Wayne gave me a good sized chunk of bone several months ago. Like everything I have the bone ended up in one of my several piles. I had forged the blade out of a piece of Bruno's 1095 earlier in the week. Since that steel is 1 1/2 X 3/8 it will produce a pretty wide blade. I really didn't have a piece of stag large enough to work with this blade and that bone came to mind. Stag is pretty easy just to look at and visualize as a handle. That piece of whale bone was big and oddly shaped so it took longer to find the handle I was looking for. As for the guard it was once once a piece of a small iron buggy wheel that my friend Wayne gave me. I did buy the steel....... :D This will be the last time this bone will be seen as a blond.

I always love seeing your work. Your work always has this beautiful simplicity to it, as in you don't add a bunch of superfluous extra stuff. I mean that completely as a compliment, it's something I certainly aspire to.

Ray that going to be a dandy one indeed. Please let me see it when you get it completed. I know it will be a beauty. It's already starting to look like a diamond from this side of the computer. :D

Superfluous, is that a real word? I'm into simplicity. The fewer parts the better. Got the fitting to the rough stag now. It shouldn't be to much longer till I have this one finished. Now watch me snap the blade into...... :D I will be posting a picture when its done.

I'm guessing that I should get this big knife epoxied tonight and it will be a done deal tomorrow. I got the fittings roughed out yesterday and changed the blond bone to the new color slightly darker than what it was....... I did some grinding on the piece of iron that was to be the guard and gave it the S look this morning. Just need to get the fittings finished and rub the blade a second time.

Sweet Ray! I'm glad you went with the s-guard --- it's looking very ray richard-ish now (a great thing!)

Very nice, I always like your knives. How do you get the butt plate to match the handle like that, if you don't mind sharing?

Luke, I made a die out of a piece of 3/4" thick steel with the radius in it. I also use the die to draw the radius on the handle material. There's a little bit of luck that also goes into the mix. I'll heat up the piece of iron and then hammer it into the die and hopefully when I'm done the radius will be real close. It doesn't come out perfect the first time so there's a lot of fitting that goes into it. This is the third time I've used this method. I think the first time went the best.

I was planing on getting this knife done sooner but got side tracked doing yard work for most the day. Its a done deal now. Its got a 10 1/2" blade and its 15 1/2" overall. Probably one of the heavier knives I have made and a lot of that weight comes from the bone handle. Its right about 24oz.

How'd you color the iron fittings? torch it to the desired color? Beautiful knife as always.

Will, I have better luck doing the color using my oxy/acd outfit. Normally I have to do the coloring twice. I'll heat the iron up till it become a dull red. Let it cool off and do it again. After it cools off I'll give it a quick rub with steel wool.
