*Update* 8/10 First Becker recommendation?

The 15 at the current pricing is unbeatable. And while it's a very different blade than the 16 (even more so than the pics suggest), it will do everything you want around camp. It's just not as good at batoning, or rather, not as good at not destroying the baton.

The 15 is a great choice especially at the closeout price. Now get a 4 and 5 before they're gone. To make the wife happy, tell her they're for your birthday or something like that or give one to her.

Even though I don't have a 15  yet...

I have to agree. You can't beat the price and it's definitely not a wimpy blade.

Otherwise, I'd go with the 11 or 14 as a starter which is what I did.

I just got a 5 and 15 in the mail today, I would say either one would serve anybody good as their first Becker, the 15 is the perfect size for general utility, while the 5 is scary big it's also very usable.

Since you already have your general needs met - i would say go big with the bk9. If you want something more general use, the bk16 is my top vote.

That being said, I would personally recommend getting 1 of 4 others as your first.

BK2 - this knife is one that starts the addiction for so many people, its an absolute beast and frankly just friggin awesome
BK4 - getting discontinued - you'll want one later, get it while its cheap - awesome chopper once you get past the first 5 minutes of staring at it oddly haha
BK5 - getting discontinued - you'll want one later, get it while its cheap - awesome slicer and just feels awesome in hand, great balance, and just fun to cut with
BK15 - getting discontinued - you'll want one later, get it while its cheap - great mid-sized knife and they are just so cheap you can't not buy one (or several)

I showed up a little late to this party...

It's no secret I have much love for the BK9, but the 9 isn't going anywhere. The 4, 5, and 15 likely won't be available a year from now and the prices are too good to pass up.

If I were starting my Becker collection today it would go something like this: 4, 5, and/or 15 in whatever order you can as quickly as you can. I would follow those up with an 11, 14, or 24 then a 16/17 and a 10 working in spares of the 4, 5, and 15 when I can if I wanted to. Now that I have a very well-rounded knife collection for playing outside I can get more redundant starting with the BK9. Then the 2 and the 7 just to scratch the itch and a 3 if it interests you.

Of course the above doesn't account for the other models that are sure to be released while you build up your collection or for knives outside of the Becker line. I've also heard that the zombie line and most of the Johnson Adventure blades are on the chopping block as well so I snatched up a Potbelly.

Alright guys the bk15 came in the mail Saturday and I didn't waste much time stripping her down and attemping to force a patina. Needless to say it turned out quite poorly if you ask me, a bit disappointed in myself, not the knife.

All in all it will be a user so I guess it doesn't matter. Plan on taking her out this weekend and see how she performs.

Took a few pics, I expect a bit of laughter but try no to rib me too hard :o

And seen this badass at the pet store

Not sure if its worth anything but the patina looks good to me. Some people spend a lot of time trying to get a pattern like that. I think I'd just take that, and then maybe use the knife to cut up some food (apples work well... also, I love apples, so maybe this is why I prefer them), and a natural patina will slowly creep up on that forced one :).

Gratz on the new steel. Now go ahead and use it and learn why we all like these things so much :p.

Doesn't look too shabby. Different types of things result in different types of patinas. Depending on what you're going for, and all. A patina isn't likely to stay on a user anyways. I'm contemplating stripping, polishing, and stonewash on one of mine.

Yeah, patinas are constantly changing. Go cut limes for 15 minutes and it'll be half gone anyhow. I started with a nearly black boiled vinegar patina that got eaten away by citrus and then I threw some mustard stripes on for fun. It's fun to experiment, but you're going to end up with something totally different two weeks from now if you use that beauty at all.

I see someone is a Titan's fan... You got yourself an absolute class act as a rookie QB starting this year!
Huge Ducks fan here and it looks like I'll be following Mariota's progress with Tennesse pretty closely this season. Go Ducks, Titan Up!

Nice work on the patina! I'd be stoked if I had one come out that way. You're too hard on yourself.

Great part is that you can polish off and try again whenever you want. Enjoy the knife!

Were all pretty excited here this season, hopefully he can help turn the team around. We've been sucking hard the past few (12) years, especially at QB since McNair left. I'm in the process of getting some tickets now, my job can get us 50% off some games this year.

Thanks man, can't wait to enjoy this blade this weekend camping with the wife. I plan on ordering a bk5 sometime this week. Was going go get it yesterday but picked up SAK cadet instead. Had to jump on the limited run orange.

Oh, that's a VERY good strip/patina job!
I'm not sure what your expectations were, but I'd say you nailed that one out of the gate.

Congrats on the new blade. And your new mascot??
