<<UPDATE>>G10 with a Twist (The Firesteel Sparky)

I usually only bring a swiss army knife (farmer or huntsman) when backpacking for trips where I'll be hiking full days (10-20 miles depending on elevation change). I like to keep my weight to the absolute minimum while still being comfortable when I stop hiking, and a fixed blade has never been necessary for my comfort.

If I did bring a fixed blade it'd probably be a mora 510.

Most of the through-hikers on the AT that I've met have just carried a swiss army classic or a leatherman micra.

I guess some people just need to hear themselves talk (or see themselves post). (If there was a "useless/pointless" smiley, I would use it here)

I think this was meant for a different topic-a litle too specific to be meant for here.

For those that ordered, just wanted to give an update. Blades are all set and will be getting scales tomorrow. I'm a little behind due to delays in HT'ing and wanting the finish on the blades nice and smooth (not that they'll stay like that :)). I am awaiting my Kydex shipment which I was told would go out today (notified of this Friday the 17th after a week on order) so I'm not happy about that. Anyhow, enough whining, just wanted to let ya'll know these will not be "phantom" blades with no updates for months. Right now I plan to send to my reseller next Monday / Tuesday if I can get my Kydex by Friday. Thanks again to all of you.

I got a Awesome email today saying my new Knife has been shipped. OH man I can't wait to get this knife and try it out!

I really hope everyone is pleased with them. If there are any issues, please let me know and I will do my best to correct them.

I'm excited to hear how everyone likes them. Please, if there are any issues, PM me through the forum and let me know.

I'd always wanted to retrofit a firesteel into a knife handle, but couldn't find a clean way to do it. It looks like you guys really made a neat little package, good work.

OK,
I got it today WHOO HOOO!
First off I would like to thank Eric and Going Gear.

My first impression of the knife is nicely made and nice design and great price. The handle feels real good in the hands the Kydex sheath w/tech loc is very nice over the old leather sheath most people use. The tech loc gives you more choices on how you want to mount the sheath on your rig or belt.
The blade length, shape and grind are very nice very well done.

One thing I would change though is the way the fire steel fits into the handle. Mine has already almost fell out just carrying the knife in hand. I know this would probably change the price a little. My solution to this issue would be for the tube that it goes into to be threaded and a 1/4 inch more metal on the fire steel head that would make it thread into the tube and be much more secure.
One side of the handle on mine has a very little gap on the bottom side the length of the handle. Looks to be from the tube in the middle the epoxy used was not cleaned up real well on the back at the tube as well. But I don't see any of that being an issue with the way the handle of the knife will perform.

One thing I thought would be cool to have with the knife would be a container either made in the sheath or hooked to the sheath for some of the cotton balls w/petroleum jelly. And Going gear took care of that cool deal guys.

I haven't used this knife yet but am looking forward to next time I go camping or hiking.
With this being said I am happy with my purchase and would buy from Eric and going gear again. I would recommend this knife to anyone looking for a nice all around outdoor knife. Like I stated above this is a great knife at a great price and from following Eric's thread on this knife I know its work in progress.
Thanks Again

I got mine today also. My initial impression when I took it out of the mail box was "oh no, they sent me an empty box". This thing is northstar light. Im not a fan of blaze orange, but I understand why they went with it on a "survival knife". Also, I would like to see the G10 slabs come further forward to the beginning of the thumb grooves and down just behind the makers mark. That being said, the knife feels good in the hand. Balance is excellent. My firesteel came loose also. I found that by giving it an a little extra force when locking it in fixed that problem. The firesteel itself throws very large sparks, much better than any of my swedish light my fires. Ill be taking this out in the next couple days for a workout and hopefully post a review. Thanks for a good knife Erik, and thanks to goinggear.com for a good idea(and whistle). I could see this becoming one of my go to knives with just a few minor changes, it really is that good.

I found a nice simple fix for my firesteel. In our shop we have o-rings and what not for paintball markers. Well I put this little very thin rubber washer on it and now it locks in place really nice. Not real happy with washer but think I can find a small thin o-ring that will work great as well.
Nice to hear others feedback as well

Hey Sam, just curious, what were you talking about with the vasoline cotton ball sheath fix. checked goingear and didnt see anything? I was thinking of cutting off 1st 3rd of fire steel and stuffing some vasoline cotton in one of those perfume sampler things I have laying around my bathroom in the bottom. Let me know. Thanks.

John

Well, since this knife has a firesteel in it I thought it would be cool to have something either on the sheath or attached to it to put some kinda tender in. Going gear must have read my mind cause they included one of the battery capsule's with my knife and it's perfect for a bunch of cotton balls.
Thanks agian to Both Eric and Going gear

I figured it was the least I could do for making you all wait for your knives. :)

Some people got whistles, some got waterproof containers. I had a little pile of random stuff next to me when packaging.

Another solution that I have found for my Sparky is to play with the length of the set screw. I don't mind having to use a little force to move it in and out, so I have mine screwed out to the point where it is super tight when turned into the notch. I have batoned with it many times and never had an issue with it coming loose. If yours has a problem with looseness that a little tinkering can't fix, just let Erik or I know and we will take care of you.

To all:

Thanks for the great ideas! Every little bit of criticism is great to hear along with the kind words. The threaded tube is definitely a great thought and was one of my original plans that I was not able to work well with my current machining setup. However, it is definitely a fantastic idea! The set screw seemed to work well, but after looking at it from an engineering point of view, it may not be a great long term solution. As always, models have to progress and change. Please let me know if you continue to have any issues at all and I will definitely work to correct them. I stand behind my work and the last thing I want is any dissatisfied customers. As Storl said, the next batch will most likely be released Jan / Feb of 2009 as my schedule permits. Dang day job takes more time than it should! :D Thanks all and best of luck!
