update on Jonny1280's broken Camillius BK9

I'm shocked a Becker just broke like that......they shouldn't break from chopping?

I'm not sure how I missed this, but it's pretty much what I had in mind from the other thread. Good job Julio!

I'm thinking that snubby will be handier than you could imagine. Nice Job.

I just got off the phone with Ethan.
He's going to contact Ka-bar and send me a laser etched BK9.
That was a Camillus made BK9 that I broke. Ethan didn't have to replace it.
I think it's very cool and I'm very greatful that he is taking the time to replace it with a new model.
Thanks Ethan! I really appreciate it.

To be sure. Ethan is the man! Glad he did that for you Jon!

Funny side note here. After I got my sheaths from JD, my wife friended his Facebook page (I don't have FB). So, today she asks me, "Hey, did you see what 710 did with that broken knife?"

haha.

great stuff right there. This is a big part of what keeps me buying Beckers. Ethan Becker is the man! The knives are ok too.. :)

Are there any ideas as to why this one broke like that? I've never heard of a Becker breaking.

It's believed that the breakage was a result of micro fractures incurred during the stamping process.

Thanks for the info; I'm a little concerned now for my BK7. I've worked it pretty hard . . . maybe it's time for retirement? Hmmmm . . .

You shouldn't. Just stomp on it. If (not saying when, but "if") it does break, then get a new one.

Either way you'll want a BK7, so just use it. If it breaks, it should be covered under warranty; it probably won't, so if you stop using it now and put it away, you'll buy a new one.....it's not like it's a super rare collectible if it's already been your regular user for so long. I've got a couple of stamped Beckers, but I just use 'em, as you should, too.

Mine is a Camillus-made BK7, so the warranty is dead along with that company. :( I plan to keep using it, but I'll get a Kabar Bk7 as a backup. I'll just tell my wife that you guys said I had to do it. ;)

BK&T is still in business, though, and Ethan (& Ka-Bar) have been pretty good about standing by his/their warranty, no matter which company made it. I realize it's not a guarantee, and you are free to buy a backup (under whatever pretense you need - plenty here will back you up) but Jonny's knife that Ethan did get replaced was a Camillus made BK9. My suggestion would be to get a 9 as your backup, if you're going to buy another blade anyway. It'll do everything the 7 does, better IMO.
