Update: ZT 0562 rattles when closed

Detent ball rattling? That's highly unlikely. Does it rattle when the knife is open too?

No - I am fairly certain it is the because detent ball does not sit flush in the detent hole on the blade. Had the same issue on three ZTs of mine, two of which KAI warranty was able to fix though I don't know how (they did not replace the detent ball or the lockside from what I can tell). One of them had to take two trips to KAI.

i just got my first ever ZT, a older (G10 S35VN) 0562 but unused when I got it. Also my first frame lock and first flipper that I’ve ever felt inclined to keep.

I love everything about this knife but have a question. With the blade closed it rattles a bit when shaken. If I hold down on the blade and touch the flipper, I can feel and hear “vertical play” for lack of a better term.

Is this a problem or am I just being overly picky?
I'm new here so I'm not well known as of yet but I have owned a ton of ZT-s and used the warranty before. If you think the knife is nice now.... send it in and have it fixed. Don't even get use to it being in rotation. Trust me it will hurt a lot less if it goes in to be fixed now the wait till later and you will not have the sinking feeling when you send In a ZT that has a lifetime warranty just to be told they will replace it with one in there line up for equal value. It great they step up but most my ZT's have names and birthdays are thrown for the. Be it the party is just me and the knives but we celebrate. Wait did I type that last few lines? That was suppose to be in my head.

I'm betting on the stop pin. Mine rattles when open if I shake it. When closed with the blade resting on it it doesn't. So I'm good with it. I could put a little loctite in the stop pin holes and that would probably fix it.

Well not to try and sway you, But I have heard great things about there customer service. If you think it will bug you I would just get it fixed. :)

I'm not familiar with this model but is it assisted? If so, the torsion bar might need a little grease.

Otherwise, contact customer service. It isn't a rumor. Kershaw/ZT has some of the best customer service in the industry. It's at least worth a phone call.

The ZT0562 is a manual flipper. A smaller version on the 0560/0561. Great Knife. From a company that actually stands behind there knives.

Here's my Spyderco Mantra 3. This is not long after it being serviced by Spyderco for the same issue. Maybe we can start a band?

Are some models worse about this than others? Not sure I want to even spend $8 for my knife to be gone when it just comes right back.

Thanks for sharing but I believe the issue of your knife is different from that of the OP. Yours sounds more like a loose stop pin that can be easily fixed with a half drop of blue loctite. OP's is more likely detent rock that is caused by the detent ball not fitting well with the detent hole.

Maybe the detent hole is full of debris? I know it's a total long shoot but it may just need a little pokey pokey with a pick or micro drill bit. See if by some chance the detent got filled with something at the factory and it didn't get caught. I'm sure that's not it but you might wanna give it a look.

I think you are right about mine anyways. I'll leave it since the symptom is the same, may help someone else. Do you think I can do this while the knife is assembled or is that just going to make a big mess?

No need to disassemble the knife at all. Just add a tiny bit of blue loctite to one end of the stop pin. It will seep into where the stop pin contacts the liner. Let it sit for a few hours or better overnight and then you are good to go. I've done this to multiple knives (Benchmade 710, Hinderer XM-18, just to name a couple).

I've had a couple XM-18s with loose closed position stop pins. They normally hold those into the lock side scale with loctite.

Not one of my ZT knives rattle when closed. Not sure if this helps, but it shouldn’t be like that.

Open the knife slightly, then close it slowly, watching the top of the lock bar ride on the blade. When the blade is in the fully closed position the lock bar should drop down to the point of contacting the blade. This will prove whether the detent ball seats properly. If it does, try tugging the blade ever so slightly to see if there is movement in the blade, without pulling the blade enough to raise the lock bar back up. If you can't move the blade without raising the lock bar, I would blue loctite the stop pin. Hope that makes sense.

Or just send the damn thing in. If mine did that it would drive me crazy to the point of hating what should be a great knife.

I gave that a shot, no change.

While I had it apart, I noticed that the detent ball was warn slightly flat. Is that normal?
