*UPDATED WITH PICS* Benchmade 710 M390 Problems...

Do you have any pics showing all the flaws?

I'm confused. You are saying the steel is soft because you sharpened off the sharpie?

I had the same question. The only thing that wiping of the sharpie quickly shows is how fast the sharpie layer scrapes off. You remove the sharpie mark without removing any steel.

My M390 710 came shaving sharp, and is as good as I would expect a very good production knife to be. They are not customs, so absolute perfection is not a reasonable expectation.

I didn't expect absolute perfection, but the gap between that high mark and what I unboxed is a vast canyon of imperfection.

I don't have pics, but I do have it up for trade over on the BM forums and hope to get some pics tonight or tomorrow night. Most of the issues have been mostly resolved through my own efforts though. I was able to center the blade today and the more I played with it and tightened/adjusted, the lesser the vertical blade play became.

The only real visible "flaw", if it can be called that, at this point, is the heavy metal removal they did when re-profiling it. Actually, here's a (really crappy, sorry!) cell phone pic... check out that plunge line!

Hey Socom, you're in Irmo. I'm right down the road from you (Lexington. Wife works in Irmo). I'd be happy to show it to you in person if you're interested?

sorry, i meant to type "can you post some better pics"

I can try to maybe later tonight or tomorrow. It depends on if I have time when I get home tonight.

Also, even though the pic sucks, you can see how shallow the plunge line is. Just compare it to a Google Image search for a 710. You'll see real quick the difference.

I really think I would send it back to Benchmade and tell them you are not satisfied. The vertical play is not in your other 710 you stated, or any of your Axis locks you said. I would tell Benchmade this, and that you know it is possible to take the vertical play out. I would also ask about the barrel spacers once more. Sounds like BM didn't take the time to correct the flaws in it and just got in a hurry to ship it back. I've read too many good things about their CS to expect this.

Just my take on it.

I've thought about it. But at this point, given that they aren't really paying much attention to what I say either on the form or when I call, I'm honestly afraid they may go at it with the belt sander again and who knows what I might get back! Plus, I'm kind of tired of paying for S&H back and forth. It's getting expensive.

Don't blame you on that! Guess I just expect better from them as too many posts are around about the quality of service that BM's CS gives.

Hope you are able to trade it for something you want!:)

I pulled the trade post. I am gong to make BM make this one right. I'll update when I can!

Glad to see that you're holding Benchmade accountable. For what you pay for a Benchmade and what they say they offer in terms of CS, they should really stand behind it. Good luck. Hope it all works out and they send you a whole new 710 for your trouble.

I am hoping that's what they do, too. I just finished writing up an account of all of my correspondence with them and it's really sad. They've had so many opportunities to make this one right. Apparently it's not just me, either. There's a 3 page post over on the BM forums about poor QC and people having to send stuff back. Luckily for most of them, it was made right. But it's sad that you have to "roll the dice" and possibly be out the time and shipping costs to send a brand new knife back for "repair". BM stated they were aware of the poor sharpening and blade play issues, but it doesn't seem to have made much difference.

Benchmade will pay for shipping, just let them know you paid once and things weren't fixed so you don't feel you should have to pay again. Call them and be nice but make sure they know you are not happy with the product or service you have received so far. I would tell them you want a new knife or at minimum a new blade if they did take off a lot of material and they really goofed up your knife bad. That said I don't see what's wrong with the plunge line. Also, some new AXIS locks have slight vertical play before they break in as one side of the lock bar can not engage as far as the other due to friction. As it wears in and smoothes out the lock bar engages evenly and any play will disappear.

I have had amazing service from them so let them know you aren't happy and give them one more chance to fix things. Everyone has bad days and the person working on your knife may have been having one. Good luck.

Keep in mind, what one person defines as reasonable, might be extreme nitpicking to someone else. I can't tell what's going on from that picture it's of no real use. So what exactly is a reasonable request these days anyway on a user knife that will end up getting all beat up over time anyway? Having a bevel that is within .0001" on each side? It's a long known fact that Benchmades come with a very fat 60 degree inclusive bevel. When the knives get sent back, they slap the same 60 degree bevel on them.

Much better to just have it sent to someone that can actually reprofile it evenly and cleanly, or do it yourself the way you want it. As for the whole "vast canyon of imperfection", I don't see it, can't really. If my knife came the way (severe bladeplay issues) as it was described in this novela, it would have gone back to the place where it was purchased, along with a note explaining why post haste the very next day. End of story., just my $.02.
Here is the bevel on my M390 710.

Well, first of all, if the imperfect bevels were the only issue, none of us would be having this discussion. I, like you, am well aware of the useless 60 degree bevel angle BM grinds on to all of their knives and am very used to "fixing" this. As for you not being able to see anything, I suppose none of my issues really exist because you can't "see" them, eh?

Sorry to say that's just plain incorrect. There are indeed a multitude of problems with this knife, but none with ANY of my other BM AXIS lock folders. As for sending it back, one of Roger's folks told me to send it back to BM.

There's no "extreme nitpicking" going on here friend, but given your logic, that this may indeed be a user that gets, "beat up over time anyway", I suppose I should just be happy to even have a knife and ignore the problems...

No offense, but I cannot see what is wrong with the plunge line from the photo.

Is it possible you are confusing the term "plunge line" with the termination of the edge bevel?
