Argh!!!! I bought my friend his first quality pocketknife, a Benchmade 950SBK Rift, sharpened the blade hair whittling sharp, wrote him a letter and packaged it up. It was supposed to be delivered Wednesday, but my friend contacted me today and said it never arrived- the driver came to his door and asked him if anyone had delivered a package and my friend replied no.

The driver said it was weird, because it had been scanned going onto the truck. He said maybe someone had taken it?

Has this happened to anyone before? I didn't put insurance on it because I never thought I'd have this kind of problem. It was packaged in a fairly small box, easy to pocket... What happens now? I've heard bad stories about people trying to get a refund of some kind from UPS and getting the runaround or blown off. (Yes, I will be contacting the company shortly...). This sucks; this whole thing was very sentimental to me not to mention time consuming and expensive.

With UPS there will automatically be $100 insurance. Unless you purchase additional insurance that is the most they will pay for on a lost or damaged package.

They will need your tracking number and any receipts or other items that can help to verify the value of the lost item. If you call their customer service number the claim can be started over the telephone. They will ask you to fax them supporting documents. They don't usually put up much of a fight when it comes to settling claims.

Hopefully your package just fell behind the drivers seat and will turn up in the next day or so.

Good Luck

UPS shipping charges automatically include insurance up to $100. You only pay for extra insurance if you want the value at $100 or more. Every package has a tracking # on it. It shouldn't be a problem to confirm that it wasn't delivered, I would think.

Now I'll qualify that statement by saing I've heard horror stories about both FedEx and UPS and making claims, even when you have the extra insurance.

I hope it works out for you.

I always use the postal service for small packages and I've never had a problem with them.

The "perfect storm" with Brown that seems to occur more often than the odds suggest. Sorry, man.

I had something similar happen with USPS. I sent a Spyderco Manix2 CTS-XHP to a guy that missed the original run, it ended up 2 states over. A delivery from Arizona to Illinois takes roughly 2-3 business days going Priority, this escapade turned into a 2 week event. The knife arrived safe and sound, and I received a phone call from a local Post Master offering apologies for the mistake. I trust the USPS a lot more than UPS or FedEx for CONUS knife delivery.

Ever notice how UPS and FedEx trucks are left open while they run deliveries? Not really hard for someone to grab a few small packages while walking by an unsecured truck.

You aren't joking. I've seen some guys that leave the trucks running while they run inside a business. It just screams "Take me for a spin!".

There's some truth to what sykes3170 said. Your statement above doesn't make sense... from what I know about how UPS works and tracks packages... something I've dealt with before, a driver wouldn't ordinarily show up with this story.

Sort of related... I've had a couple of post office packages "disappear" that were tracked up to the point of delivery. In both cases I approached the carriers (different each time) and showed them in a pointed but non accusatory manner that the package was tracked until it was in their possession. Both times I was told, "let me check on that"... both times the package appeared within a couple of days. In one case, the pacakage had obviously been opened and retaped. (If you want the rest of the story, I went to file a complaint... the counter guy told me I should just be grateful that I got the package). I'm not totally saying it was the carrier, but wierd it showed up with no explaination. (I did have others that were just misdelivered, but was told when this happened, and one never showed up).

Anyway, your friend's statement is possible, so I wouldn't accuse the driver, but I would make it clear to the driver if you can that you're going to have it investigated beyond just filing a claim, and see what happens. At the very least, I would go to the local office at the delivery point if there is one, and just ask how this could happen. It might prompt a "sudden find", if they realize you're taking an interest.

(This is why the UPS driver I have now gets a free sharpening anytime he wants, although I think he's a good guy anyway). :) In fact, I'll try and catch him in the next couple of days, and see if/when the above story your friend told could occur.

I have a friend who works for UPS, and sad to say, but him and some of the other guys have a lot of nice stuff they never paid for....

Something small like a knife would be too easy for one of the guys to slip in there pocket and walk out with, which I think is pretty horrible.

But yeah, insurance insurance insurance.

I've dealt with the same UPS guy for over a decade. In that time things have been 100%. He even knows my dogs name and they get along fine. I gave him a knife to pass on to his son, a soldier getting ready to deploy to afghanistan.

One time he was off. The replacement delivered it near 7:00PM, and it was sliced open and someone had fished around inside for something grabbable. He just dropped it on the front porch, and took off without knocking or even trying to get my attention.

It was a Ferhman Final judgement so he didn't find anything small enough to grab.

It was obvious what was going on. I talked to the regular driver about it and have never had a problem with the replacement since.

I guess it helps to pay attention to who you are doing business with and get to know them. Make yourself known to them and treat them decently. Sometimes it helps.

Long time ago I was at meps getting ready to ship out to basic. Myself and four other guys killed some time by walking to the store. On our way back a UPS truck drove by with the door half up, and a package actually fell out like in a movie or something. Turned out to be a , well, a pocket p***y. We laughed our asses off and left it in a plant pot in the hotel lobby area. Can you imagine that guy trying to contact UPS about his lost package. What do you tell them when they ask what was in the box LOL. Something tells me that a UPS delivery guy going for a five finger discount is more likely than forgetting to close the door latch. Oh, and in the off chance that the guy that lost that package back in 1999 Portland Oregon is on here, sorry about that and hope all turned out well, lol.

Just had this happen with a laptop I sold on eBay. It got delivered to the correct address, but left on the steps--when the buyer arrived home two hours later, no package.

You will need to file a claim with UPS. They will contact the recipient and the driver who "delivered" it. Assuming everything checks out, you should get your funds (up to your $100 insurance) and shipping refunded within two or three weeks.

I did have kind of a problem with Fed Ex once. I was waiting on a package and when I checked the tracking info, it said the box had been delivered 10 minutes previously. Well, I was at home, and I know they didn't drop it off here. I walked up and down the street, checking different houses, no package. I called customer service and talked to somebody in India (lol). They said they'd contact the driver and get back with me.

About 30 minutes later the driver showed up with the package. He'd confirmed delivery for every package he was dropping in my neighborhood before he actually dropped them off. That way he didn't have to keep stopping to update his handheld PC, he could just run and gun.

So if he missed a stop, it would have still shown up as delivered.

Sorry to hear that.:( Sometimes I think it is not "what can Big Brown do for you today", rather it's "what can Big Brown do to you today", or even "let Big Brown drop a Big Brown on you today"!

One of the USPS supervisors I worked with was driving home when he saw a USPS truck in front of a large building. He pulled over and saw the driver had ducked into the building, leaving his engine running. Since my friend had a valid USPS licence, he got in and drove the truck around the block, walked back, and stood by the building entrance.

The driver came strolling out -- stopped, stared, looked up and down the block, and started shaking. Then he saw my friend standing there with the truck keys in hand, tossing them in the air and catching them ...

Busted!

Well, my buddy got his knife. It took me a bit to find out what happened, but it was in his hands on the same evening I made my post. He said the UPS guy suddenly dropped it off at 7 pm that night. When his wife tried to say something to him he just raised his hand and kept going. and I quote "Weird dude."

So that's that. Glad he got it, he loves it. Just...make sure to use insurance next time.
