Urban Camo - like it? hate it?

I'm not fond of any kind of camo, I like my blades with stonewash or satin finish, but if I really like knife, I won't let some stupid coating scare me away from it. :p

I think they're pretty good, depends on the knife though. I don't see why everyone is treaty them so differently they're just another finish option like black, satin, etc. it's a preference I guess. With that said it is more than a coincidence they are found on some cheap, low quality "tactical" knives as a marketing scheme.

Ick.

Only GIs and hunters need camo, and nobody needs a camo knife. I can't see a single reason for a camo knife. It's just too much of a gimmick for me, even if done well. I don't own any guns with camo either. When hunting, if I need camo for my gun then I use a camo sock.

I usually wear an urban camo skin tight body suit... makes people think my knife is just floating there. That tends to freak them out pretty good. For laundry day, I (along with some top ninjas and military scientists) have developed a Laundromat Camo body suit. We're working on coating a few S&W fixed blades with it.

OK waited, now I gotta comment. I can honestly say that Tiger Stripes have made me much happier knife-use wise. Let me explain. I used to *avoid* using my knife for something that would scratch it up. I hated that people would see my (to them) expensive knife and it would look like crap. Even for the sake of my own eyes.

But with stripes, the black lines across the blade are a greater visual distraction than the scratches themselves. You don't see what would be massive scratches on other blades. Meaning I can use it in more situations than otherwise. Meaning I'm happier;)

I just can't see the point of it (see? camouflage is working!)
But I like it slightly better than black blades. Gimmie satin finish every day.

If it looks good on the knife, I like it :p In all seriousness, I like colors, patterns, and textures so, in some cases, I think that "urban camo" can look good. When poorly done, though, it looks rather doofy.

I think that the style of knife and blade play a big part in determining what sort of finish would be optimal on that knife. And, like I said, I like variety. I think that every type of blade finish can look good on a knife; the key is to pair the finish and the blade type optimally :)

I think the one in the middle is kind of neat but the other two look like a teenage kid painted them with some spray paint. Really, why would you need a camoflouged knife blade? $400?? It's too bad that people are actually giving the manufacturers that kind of money and the ability to keep those prices that high. Just my thought.

I'm seeing more zebra striped jobs from inexpensive to outrageously. How did "urban" camo and zebra stripes come about and do you like it?

When I first saw a Strider knife I went bugged eyed thinking - man I gotta have one. Of course my mouth dropped open when I saw the cost. Still thinking of getting one but waiting for the -I gotta have one NOW- reaction to wear off. Actually I like the Strider handle shape as well. Got Buck Strider just to see how the handle felt.

My latest thoughts are what will other peoples reaction be? I work in an office so the need to carry one is nil.

But yeah they look really good but I recognize the lack of need for such a pattern.

Don't like it at all. I admire knives for clean lines, and functional design. It's like buying a nice looking car like a Corvette, and screwing up the appearance by splotching paint all over it. And where is black and white a tactical advantage I ask you? Well I guess you could say that UGLY is SCARY!

I don't understand why someone would be unwilling to use a tool because it might get scratched. If you're not willing to use it, why do you carry it?

Feh.
Shiney rules!

And interesting side note concerning urban camo.
The current desert camo, worn at night here in the big city works surprisingly well. The orange (sodium?) lights make the sandy hues blend in with the concrete and pavement.

I am willing to use my knives. I'm the one who put a folder through a car fender for the fun of it. I was just saying that Striders encourage me to use them during the *worst* situations (cutting metal shit, etc) because the marks are all hidden by the attraction of ones eyes to the stripes instead of the sctratches.

So if you drop it, you never gonna find it. :grumpy:

Heh...

You just said that you used to *AVOID* using your knife because you were afraid to scratch it up. Now you're saying that you enjoy putting knives through car fenders? Whichever it is, that's simply not normal. Be a man, don't worry if a tool of yours gets a few scratches and quit trying to deanimate cars with your Dark Ops folder, fer crissakes!;)
