Urban Camo - like it? hate it?

I thought urban camo consisted of a NY Yankees jacket and a pair of blue jeans

Yeah, try that in the South End...

Incidentally, for non-camo finishes, I prefer beadblast or stonewash finish. I can't stand high gloss finishes. They're nice on show pieces, but when you have to use that puppy, there are times when you don't want to give off a flash of metal.

Seems like a gimmick to me, honestly. The purpose of camouflage is to make it harder to distinguish between the camouflaged thing and the background, which I think is totally unnecessary for something like a small knife.

I don't think anyone is dumb enough not to see a camo knife in your hand if they're close enough to see any knife in your hand anyways (or at least come to the conclusion that you are indeed using a knife). "That guy just opened that box with his knuckles!" Don't think so...

i think the one of the factors for urban camo is to break up the outline of the knife. so its not the fact that no one is going to see anything in your hand. its the fact they see SOMETHING in your hand, but since they cant distinguish the outline of a knife, they wont know what sort of object you have.
but the only pattern that ive seen that accomplishes this is really well done digi-camo with litterally very confusing pixels

i've never seen any urban camo that works ........only camo for hunting in the U.S. (good stuff) and desert camo.... black would be my best bet in the one in a thousand chance that somebody would see my shiny knife in the one in a thousand chance that i'd need it..........did that make sense??????

Urban camo looks goofy to me in most cases, especially if colors are used. Grayscales don't usually look too bad though.

I'm seeing more zebra striped jobs from inexpensive to outrageously. How did "urban" camo and zebra stripes come about and do you like it?

The first time I remember seeing them was on Strider knives. Seems to me it does an excelent job of camoflaging bad design.

If I get to the point where I have a knife in my hand I want the other guy to see it and know instantly what it is. While I am prepared to use it, I would rather not, In fact, It would be prefferable for all parties involved.

-Just a bit currious as to the design problems with strider knives.

I don't what this "digi-camo" is. Do you have any links or pictures that show it?

DGG, Just go to Truenorthknives.com and look on the strider page. He has a few pics of the Digi-camo finish. Very nice finish, that really does a lot to hide scratches and such. It is also a bit confusing to look at in different lighting.

Except, of course, if the guy has a gun.

I think the point is not to make the knife invisible or anything like that, but to not let your opponent get a clear picture of where the point (and how long your knife) is.

Probably doesn't make much of a difference. It looks alright. Sometimes. And when you drop it in the bushes, makes it harder to see so you have the excuse of expanding your knife collection. Now thats a plus.

Inever have seen the sense behind the concept of urban camo.

An urban setting is straight lines and right angles... not conducive to camo.

Urban cammo is used - more for psychological intimidation- than it is for camouflage. I prefer middlecore knives. Not too hardcore not too softcore. :D

I don’t like it myself, I don’t see the function. That is just my opinion, if it is what you like than by all means buy it. As they say “whatever floats you boat”. -john

Thanks I found it. That is a very interesting looking finish. My first instinct is run a grab my spray bottle of Breakfree CLP and give it a squirt to stop the corrosion, except that is just the pattern on the blade. I didn't see where they used it on any of the scales/handles.

Generally I don't like the camo thing. I don't even care for black coatings. However I don't mind the camo effect on the Strider knives, it just seems to fit them.

i did a few blades with an etched on pattern/camo to try out the look.i like the look, but, being a knifemaker i can always beadblast/refinish the blade

DGG, there's really no good way to use the digi-cam coating on the handles. I've seen a few custom SNG/SMFs with the Digi-cam coating on the Ti handle, but I much prefer the flamed treatment on the Ti handles. I think it makes for less notable scratching. As far as AR/GBs are concerned, I don't believe anyone is making Digi-cam G10. I'm not even sure if its possible. However, with their offerings in the handle (Black, Green, and CB) I think they pretty much have most environments covered.
